I was taught in school that Mandela was some saint
I was also fed this lie in school. Imagine my surprise when, as an adult, I learned about necklacing, and murdering white people for farmland. The country literally went from a food surplus, selling excess food to various other nations, to a full-on famine unable to support even half their population in the span of just a few short years.
I just learned this here... I keep having to backtrack on my “education.” I remember the Mandela lecture though, I just never followed up on it, that’s fucked. My biggest “oh shit” moment is when I remembered when a teacher had a two hour seminar about “why America isn’t the greatest country anymore” while showing the clip from The Newsroom. I’m sure you guys have seen it. It’s so fucked up cause when you’re sitting in the class you don’t think anything malicious is happening. I still remember how it felt, it felt like the teach was being revolutionary and insightful.. obviously I know better now but it’s horrible what they’re doing with the education system. This happened to me over 10 years ago now. I can’t imagine what they’re doing now.
My middle school history teacher showed us that clip too, I bought it at the time and thought it was an interesting thought at the very least. She was a wonderful teacher, but she also said that communism was never done right.
