IIRC, Pres. Obama had stumbled while taking the oath of office the first time. As this would raise the possibility he was not really president, it made sense to redo it to eliminate the possibility of a court challenge on the matter.

The private oath for Pres. Obama was to make sure that he had actually taken the oath so it could not be raised in a court challenge that since he had not taken the oath, he was therefor not President.
