Before us were various nuclear disasters, including Chernobyl, which could've irradiated the planet if it wasn't taken care of, and would've destroyed smaller planets. There are also plenty of nuclear bombs, and detonating enough of those could cause a nuclear winter.
We've already destroyed many species through hunting, farming, or just being successful as humans. If we ended up causing the extinction of plants/animals with critical nutrients, even as cavemen, we wouldn't have been able to advance further.
There was that meteor that killed the dinosaurs. Could've been bigger.
There was the release of oxygen from single celled organisms in the ocean that eventually led to the Cambrian explosion. It could've also changed the atmosphere enough to make earth to cold/hot for life at that point.
I hope we can get through this last one before Elon launches his rockets into space. Though, I wonder if they all decided to speed things up because we're starting to get those rockets now.
Totalitarianism isn't stable or inevitable, at all. That's ridiculous.
The most extreme form would be your body, with your brain as the ruler. Age already exists, and that's with an immune system. Synthetic things decay much more quickly. All that decay is without many of the cells hating the brain of this body. A good analogy now for if China took over would be if a body suddenly formed and was riddled with cancer as well as almost every disease known to man.
For it to be stable, everyone would have to completely love and fear their ruler. They don't even do that in North Korea, which is maintained by China.
One of many.
