Who were hell bent on a communist uprising that would have killed over 1 million?

According to the history books, and allegedly some of his own officers, he employed some pretty heavy handed "enhanced interrogation techniques" against people that may or may not have been part of the communist infiltration. If all of it were true I'd say he went too far but it's pretty much a guarantee they are exaggerated.
