Look I don't know if you were ever actually in the military or not, and it may have been some years since I left it, but I don't ever remember being programmed like some robot that "has to follow orders". In fact I clearly remember being trained that "just following orders" is no excuse for following unlawful orders, and that our oath was first and foremost to the Constitution, not the whims of bad commanders.
The US serviceman is a citizen soldier and a member of a volunteer force and fully capable of making individual decisions and deciding when not to follow an order. And unlike many who serve in other militaries, are unwilling to fight against their own fellow citizens just because the brass says to. They also know that the CinC is at the very top of the chain of command and any orders from him override those of any brass.
