Why was this so important to Obama, was it just a legacy thing or were there other power or financial benefits?

I was not following politics at the time.

Everyone is required to have insurance, it’s a law. If you don’t you have to pay a tax for it. Basically communism. Anybody who had private insurance, and was a reasonable price, lost that insurance and had to pay more for less coverage. The coverage that was offered by Obamacare, was not even sufficient for the people that it was supposed to reach. Basically it was too expensive for the poor people. So if you didn’t have it, you still had to pay a tax for that too. All it did was help the pharmaceutical companies and the medical insurance companies. It did not help the people at all

This doesn't directly answer your question, but I hope it helps. My primary concern with ANY single payer health care system is this: if that single payer refuses to pay, you don't get the health care.

One of the current arguments for a single payer system is that "no one should go into massive debt just to stay alive." Well, under a single payer system, if the single payer decides that your treatment is too expensive, or is unlikely to work, they will refuse to pay. And you CAN'T PAY FOR IT YOURSELF. That's why it's called single payer.

Our current system is a two payer system. You are the second payer (your insurance is the first). If your insurance won't pay for something, you can (if it is an elective procedure) (or must, if you receive life saving treatment in an ER for example).

Imagine that a single payer system existed in the US. If a hospital knows that they can get any amount of money from the government, they will provide as many services as possible to get as much money as possible. The Government would bleed dry in a decade while Hospital Executives became the new ruling elite.

So how do you stop that from happening? Rules and regulations. Maybe only a certain number of days in the ICU? Maybe limit the number of times in a year that a person can be seen by a physician? Maybe each citizen has a maximum dollar amount of services that they can receive in a month, a year, a lifetime?

Sorry for the semi-coherent ramble... I'm all jacked up on vicodin while recovering from a vasectomy that I had this morning... that I paid for out of pocket because insurance wouldn't cover it.

And if insurance wouldn't cover it... you think the government would?

Yes, in Brazil we have socialized medicine. Just the poor use the system and it's horrible. Everything the government do turns to shit.

In the end we have to pay high taxes and if we want good treatment we have to pay for private care or insurance.

And the politicians manage to rob the funds that suposed to go into health care, it's massive amounts of money that can keep growing because it's to "save lives"

Before Obamacare, you could still buy your own health insurance through the companies operating in your state.

There were more caveats, though, and pre-existing conditions were not covered unless you could prove you previously had insurance within the last XX months (usually 12-18) and your condition was covered by them.

A lot of people had 'major medical' plans that would cover catastrophic events, but those plans did not cover basic doctor visits, urgent care, or prescriptions. Most people would just cover those with cash out of pocket.

IMO, the system was fine if you had the patience to sit down and read the insurance documents, but a lot of dumb people would have had a hard time making it work.

Obamacare basically came up with a federal version of this system, made it more lax about pre-existing conditions, gave more power to hospital management companies (instead of doctors), mandated standard coverage tiers (blue, silver, gold etc), and enacted penalties for people who didn't have coverage. It also made employers attest to providing their employees with a plan that met the minimum coverage provisions of Obamacare (IRS Form 1095-C).

It basically helped lazy or low intelligence people get insurance coverage while penalizing free choice and giving power to the healthcare/hospital lobby. For people who have chronic health problems (diabetes, autoimmune, etc) it probably was a net win, though.

They want you dependent on the govt for everything because if you need them you won’t shoot them in the face when they do stuff you don’t like...or so they think

ACA was a tax, not a Healthcare law. It was a power grab.

Controlling people through controlling the medical industry and limiting people's choices and options both financially and practically is a part of Marxist theology.

I had an Obamacare policy. What happened is that it ended up costing me most of my free income, then when I got hit by a car they weren't there for me. The company had gone bankrupt due to poor management. So I was out thousands of dollars and had no insurance. Thanks Obama.
