actually it started slightly before that. you see, originally they were the "premium priced" fast food which enabled them to have good quality, with a very limited menu to keep it that way.
when twisters were introduced, KFC was still good -- same when they tried introducing sandwiches.
the problem became cost after the first recession. other restaurants had such low expenditure they could afford dollar menus which killed KFCs sales terribly.
they kept trying to add to the menu but were not able to reduce cost, thus beginning the slow spiral downwards.
in the end they DID reduce costs (but not really the price) because they pretty much had to -- they no longer had enough sales numbers to be able to reduce cost to themselves and consumers, so it was just to themselves.
the quality of the chicken severely suffered.
where once their tenders were actually decent meat, none of that chewy gristles you get in frozen chicken tenders -- they started becoming essentially the same as tyson chicken tenders lol. gristles and all.
they definitely do not use the "original recipe" or quality chicken in the buckets either because it would cost too much for them without getting back to pre-recession level sales and competitiveness (probably too late for that now)
even to actually lower the cost instead of offering tiny portions for less, would require this, even with the lower cost of ingredients.
ultimately what happened to KFC was failure to adapt to changing market conditions. after the recession, if people wanted to pay KFC prices there was no reason -- the food at a local diner is higher quality and costs the same.
KFC wouldve had to go back to small-business strategy to really actually survive intact during that time period, but they didnt, couldnt even. so trying to continue the enterprise ultimately became the failure that KFC is today.
KFC needed drastic change. they did need new menu options, but cheap ones that still were good quality. by the time they tried to integrate A&W and other restaurants it was pretty much too late for that though.
I actually remember KFC becoming bad over time. I remember analyzing the situation as a kid and have continued to do so in adulthood. Im pretty sure im correct on this, but its truly speculation
You mean any fried chicken done right
True...but every so often, I find a well run KFC that's clean and fresh and mother fucking delish............
KFC has been terrible since the crash in 01.
