I think he underestimated how evil and corrupt the Democrats were and how many male and votes they would be able to fabricate. he knew what went on last time in 2016 when they stopped the count in Pennsylvania. this time they were ready with the mail in and he underestimated how far they would go with it.
I think he underestimated it because he probably has faith in people like we do and if he could have ever imagined that something so crazy would happen he would have thought the legislatures and judges would do something about it to charge these people and or stop the corruption from succeeding. Who would have ever thought that in every single state every single legislature, every single judge, and everyone else involved would be so weak, scared, or complicit. 98% of them.
Then he thought higher of the supreme Court too. They've been corrupted. maybe in the weeks after the election he even thought there would be a point where we would riot like the Democrat thugs. In short, he overestimated us, but to a much larger degree he underestimated how evil the Democrats really are.
I keep posting and stressing every chance it's relevant and every chance I get that this is all Obama. This is all his deep state actors he has in the DOJ. They're all his. They're all doing this. I just cannot figure out why Trump hasn't drained them all and why he's not ranting and raving about them. It's all them. 100% of it. The CIA and FBI are totally corrupt. Agents of evil. That is in no sense hyperbolic either.
Hopefully I can give you some optimism. Trump has been well aware of the avenues of Fraud. In 2012 he tweeted "'It doesn't matter who you vote for--it matters who is counting the votes.' Be careful of voter fraud!" Most of the problems we had with the election had to do with the counters themselves. Whether it was them counting votes twice, the machines using decimals to shave votes to Biden, counters flooding votes under the guise of mail-in votes, or just kicking out the watchers. Like you said though, "he knew what went on last time in 2016" So that might not help much.
Since he has been in office he has been keeping an eye on fraud as well. In 2019 he tweeted:

" Just the tip of the iceberg he said and this tweet honestly reads like something you would see today. He had a year and change to prepare for this, and he knew the left was going to go at him harder than before.
He retweeted last year a tweet that said: "Voter fraud is real: Los Angeles county has a registration rate of 112% its adult population. The entire state of California has a registration rate of 101% 11 of 58 counties in CA have registration rates above 100% Is this why California is solid Blue?" This election cycle we saw similar numbers in Michigan.
This April he tweeted about mail in voting: "100% mail in voting is ripe for fraud. States should maintain the responsibility for their voting laws. Democrats want to use 100% mail in voting to upend states rights over their own elections. Republicans want to make sure those who can legally vote do so and do so once." and "Mail in ballots substantially increases the risk of crime and VOTER FRAUD!
He was quite aware of Biden's dementia spilling the truth (a symptom of dementia is that the sufferer has no mental filter and thus finds it difficult to lie) about the most inclusive voter fraud organization in history, and that Biden didn't need voters to get him elected. He also knew it would be a tough fight as Clinton said Biden cannot concede under any circumstances.

Before he ran for office he kept talking in his VLOGs about the the division in the Republican party. That division was between RINOs and their conservative constituents. He also implies about how they are in on the voting fraud (and thus likely to backstab him) in this tweet: "Of course there is large scale voter fraud happening on and before election day. Why do Republican leaders deny what is going on? So naive!"
Looking at the courts, he distrusted them. In 2017 he wrote "

They may have been worried about the precedent set and they told Trump the case would be heard if he was plaintiff (and a case is working its way up there now with him as that). That aside there are numerous other paths for victory ahead of us even without SCOTUS.
In the end, Trump said it himself that he knew what was coming: "The greatest Election Fraud in our history is about to happen. This may top the Democrats illegally spying on my campaign!" and the fraud was every bit as extraordinary as he said it would be.
I don't believe he was blindsided. I believe he thought we'd outpace it. Again, he underestimated how BLATANTLY OBVIOUS they would make it. Since it's SO obvious he probably thought it couldn't be ignored by the courts.
