He was doing it to placate his fan base which I imagine includes lots of anti-Trumpers. I think he was deliberate in avoiding substance because, as he says early on in the song, he has more in common with Trump supporters (to his own surprise) than leftists

oh, yeah definately, but he did open that door to the idea that maybe, just maybe, the right is right. So on that i applaud him.
