In my mind the novelty of social media has begun to run its course. It’s selfies, memes, occasional life status, arguing, advertisements and mostly politics.

Do you think that people are growing tired of it? It certainly seems that people are become more aware of the dangers of social media. Will this be something that tailors down into anonymous social media (like TD.win) in the future? Will it be nuked by Trump’s EO (Facebook, Twitter and the like for election meddling)?

Of course I feel nostalgic for when social media was just a gimmicky thing to put a playlist and change your background on MySpace. Now it seems like the only way to “stay in touch” with certain people you’ve known. Is the latter a valid enough reason for longevity? I’d be very interested in your input Pedes.

Thank you.

I have used social media to make money for years but I don't care anymore. I would love to see it go away. We can do blogs, text messaging, email, and boards like this. It would be nice.

The younger generation has literally grown up with this and it is their only reality. As well, vanity never dies. Plus, it leads to the new way of making money: doing stuff online. Kids are "streaming" all kinds of shit now, and getting money for it. It's a weird world out there now.

No, I don't think people are growing tired of it. I do think it will become more and more an echo chamber, as soon, any and all speech that they don't want will be banned. We won't be allowed to even HAVE an account. That's 50% of the people so perhaps there won't be enough for them to make a profit, if they even do.

It's always been gimmicky....just flaunting and posturing....but it does keep you in contact with people you would have had to hire a private detective to find ........your circle is probably ten people and you never needed Facebook for that.

Hope the narcissism dies. Maybe a great medium for information...

I doubt it ever dies out. But I do think it will continue to evolve. At the end of the day, social media, which stems from the internet's ability to connect the world, is another layer of social interaction, just like going to the forum, bazaar, or market was in times past. You can, and increasingly will be able to, find anything under the sun in social media - a mirror of our physical world. If anything, I think it will become more prominent in our lives and intertwined with it, if you allow it, as tech like virtual and augmented reality continues to mature. Kinda like the world of Altered Carbon. And also, like @OlenaLehua said, people make a lot of money with it, as useless and ridiculous as so many videos and pics seem, and a large portion of our young generations are growing up in a world where they have never not had tech and access to media. Ultimately, the true underlying value of social media is rooted in influence and influence, in the course of human events, is tantamount to power....enter CCP.

FB, Twitter, Google, etc don't care about connecting people...they care about shaping people...hence why we find ourselves where we are today with news being censored to drive a shaped narrative.
