I recommend the Yaesu FT-70. Don’t get a baofeng. Of course, the radio is fairly limited w/o repeater. Make friends with hams. Also, get your license. It’s not hard and it will keep things honest.
A sovereign citizen I work with bought his entire family and most of his neighborhood baofeng radios. They barely transmit to the end of his street. He upgraded antennas on most of them and they still suck. He says they burn through the batteries fast also.

Japan makes FAR better radios. You’ll pay more, but you won’t have regrets when it really matters.
