All this talk about crossing the Rubicon got me interested in what the Rubicon river looked like. So I looked, and for most of its course it is no bigger than what I would call a creek. Now, I understand what the phrase means and what it meant for Caesar and his army to cross the river that was forbidden for him to cross, but in my mind I pictured them crossing a wide dangerous river when in reality all they had to do was get their feet wet.
