They were fighting radical Islamic terrorists. Bosnian leader Alija Itzbegovic was a pro-sharia Islamist who wrote a book praising Pakistan and saying he wanted to make the first Islamic state in Europe. He brought in Taliban, Chechen and Al-Queada terrorists to fight on his side.
If you know the history of the Balkans that line "our sons will never be slaves" is very significant. It's a reference to how when they were occupied by the Ottoman empire the Ottomans would take the first born son of Christians as a form of "tax", raise them in a military barracks, brainwash them into Islam then send them back to Christian areas as an occupying force. An absolutely monstrous form of psychological warfare.
When Milosevic was on trial at the Hague he said "when they behead your people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this war was all about".
Then why were Serbs the aggressor when the war started in Yugoslavia, displacing hundreds of thousands of lives in Kosovo, why did they slaughter thousands of innocent civilians in Srebrenice and bussed women to be raped in their military bases, why did they attempt to invade Slovenia as well while knowing Slovenia pulled out and didn’t want to be involved in any conflict? Don’t act like Milosevic and Serbia were the ones defending and protecting their country, they were the tyrants.
