When times were tough for everyone in real estate and the banks were trying to call in his and everyones debts, he was scheduled to go to a dinner with a bunch of the bankers he owed money to. He obviously didn't want to go because he owed them a lot of money, they wanted his money and knew that basically they hated his guts.
Even though he didn't want to go he went anyway. He ended up sitting next to one of the "tough guy" bankers he owed money that was known for just ruthlessly ruining people. They got talking and throughout the night they ended up building a rapport. Long story short because of that he was able to negotiate a way to proceed that was much better for him that would have been impossible if he had of avoided the dinner function.
It wouldn't surprise me if there was an element of that logic happening here too
