The prohibition on CFCs and the subsequent closing of the ozone hole is one of the few wins I think the environmentalist movement can take just credit for.
The ice age thing was largely a media lie, rather than a science mistake. The science (correctly) concluded the sun was headed for a Global Solar Minimum, a period where the sun is 0.1% darker, and separately diacovered that the previous ice age was kicked off by a GSM. Media decided all GSMs were terrifying, and all of them produce ice ages, despite the fact they happen routinely.
Acid rain was more of a blend of bad science and bad media.
