I don't know. It would seem more plausible to me that Russia would rather have Clinton in the White House. They would find her more easy to influence and control (i.e., buy off) than Trump. Thus if they really had the means to swing the election in 2016, they wouldn't have helped Trump.
Ive thought about all the potential truths in this scenario, and I think yours is very very plausible. Just think of the geography, China is a waaaaaay bigger threat than the US is to Russia. I also think Russia is fighting for its future too. They are less a big scary country than a country with a declining population and economic success tied directly with oil, at least imo
