Also, stun guns are pretty useful. If you know basic electronics you can pull the resistor out and rewire it to increase the power output. You only get a few shots per battery that way, but it'll knock someone on their ass.
A disposable camera flash can also be made into a diy stun gun if you're broke. Super easy. Just take the flash section with the battery out, clip the wires to the flash. Charge the flash and touch the wires to someone and pow!
Body armor would not be overkill.
