Recording everything, just in case, may keep dark actors at bay. The more documentation the better. That way, they can't hide everything like with Stephen Paddock in Vegas. Livestream it when possible, I would say. Regardless if something happens or not, the event will be historically significant.

My company sells body cameras to police and they are ruggedized and have 8-10 hour batteries. They run about $100 for the Chinese crap ones and $350 for German ones (unfortunately no US firms make these, Taser's the most popular and they are Chinese). Not soliciting business here, just advising that these are designed for on body use and they have small strap on lenses that offer hidden camera on body capabilities. I will definitely be wearing at least two, on my chest and on my hat.

Wear masks, sunglasses and hats to conceal your identity if you're carrying ANY weapon, legal or not. DC uses surveilance and, as mentioned above, they will not hesitate to declare victory when they arrest you at 4:30 in the morning in the place you chose to sleep.
Also stay warm, stay together, carry plenty of fresh water while out, dehydration is even more insidious in the cold!

If you forget, place a glass on the door knob over a hard object so it smashes but make it secure enough that you don't accidentally trip it. Broken glass sucks. Works on windows too. Only limit is if the glasses in the hotel bathroom are plastic.
Other tips:
The latches on the back of the hotel doors are defeated trivially. A rubber band pulling the latch or chain in the correct direction can improve security on these a lot.
Leave the TV on to a news channel and hang the do-not-disturb on when you are out of the room. There's no way to know you aren't still in there and just fell asleep.
If there is a high enough probability someone will break in at 4:30am, warrant in hand or not. Don't Be There. Let your lawyer arrange a surrender later.
Stay out of trouble, but if you can't, write the phone number you need to get you out of trouble using a sharpie on your body somewhere or memorize it completely. If you get conked on the noggin, it's possible someone else will find the number, an advantage over memorization.
Do not pull fire alarms for less than life or death, but know people will pay more attention to these, than screams of "Help me" Failing that, trip the smoke detector if you have time. Repeat: Life or Death only.

We have actually many things to sort this out. BLM and Antfia may block the roads and street going into DC a few days prior to 6th. Hotels may be threaten to not host Trump supporters. They have a few billion dollars to spend to do whatever they can do make it look like a small event.

Soft Defense
Conventional defensive devices are not always available. As already noted, stay out of melee range, move backwards if you have to, but if you get jammed up, you have options:
Jacket: A medium weight long sleeve jacket can be a defense device and is normal wear for this time of year. It can be used to tangle up an attacker, block a non-firearm handheld weapon and cover the eyes of an attacker long enough to break away to safety. More effective if you can practice first. The jacket needs to be carried to be ready, not worn, so if things are looking uncomfortable and you can't clear the area, take it off. Even a windbreaker can work here, but it's too heavy, it's harder to manage. If you need warmth, dress layers instead. Make it a cheap jacket so you are willing to walk away from it. If you dress layers and your inside layer has a couple of pockets, a pair of thick magazines or thin books left/right can slow a sharp object or disperse the force of a punch. These can be stuck in your pants to protect your kidneys, if you think your back will be exposed, but if you go in with front and back both, it may start to look weird.
Belt: A belt held in both hands has defensive uses if you get backed up, but requires more technique and will draw attention if you are holding it. Take it off and coil it into a pocket. If you carry two belts and draw police attention, you'll have some explaining to do. Make sure your pants will stay up without your belt otherwise you risk tripping and going to the ground. Go cheap with this, you may lose it if you need to use it.
Gloves: If you think you may face a knife, there are cut resistant work gloves used by people who have jobs involving sharp tools all day long. Usually they are Kevlar. Getting away from a knife or sharp object is a better move, but if you can't, it adds to your defense. If you can't get a pair of these, leather work gloves aren't as good, but better than bare skin and may stop a cut from getting as deep. Go for better quality here, as it's unlikely your gloves will come off and get lost. Latex or Nitrile gloves worn under or alone may keep chemicals off your hands and in wuflu times, aren't seen as weird.
Sunglasses: Bring a pair or few from the dollar store. These will help protect your eyes a bit from random tossed objects. Won't help with tear gas if the Police have to pop one and the wind drifts your way. If not enough time, clear safety glasses from the hardware store will be less noticeable. Cheap "Reader" glasses with the least correction can work and shouldn't mess up your distance vision to much. Yellow lens RayBans shooting glasses scream "I'm a gun owner" (Meme from the Big Lebowski). Wrap around as-seen-on-TV "Blu Blockers" suggest something way more innocent and harmless and provide side protection.
Bandannas: You're probably going to be in area that requires face coverings. A bandanna can be removed to be used for first aid if/as needed. Larger size better than smaller. They can even be worn over a mask if you need to roll that way. Cheap enough that you can have a spare or two. Tied correctly, it can help hold sunglasses or other eye protection in place. Can be used as a do-rag for some head cover, as well as a sweat band if/as needed. Won't stop a direct blow, but would keep broken glass from getting into your hair and control fluids you may get sprayed with. Used as a sweat band, it can keep fluids out of your eyes.
Groups: Pairs or triads are better when not moving. Antifa members are known for blindside attacks. If are alone, check your 6 [behind you] often, or put it against a wall, pole or other object that can prevent or reduce a blindside attack, then plan a move to where there are people.
Know the opponent The left has been programmed to believe some people are evil, nazi's or worse. Antifa adds violence. They think you are Hitler incarnate ergo, they are morally justified in harming you.
