Anybody with a router is likely setting up, or already has set up intelligence gathering tools.
As demonstrated in CHAZ, some clever folks set up free WIFI points around the area and snared quite a few ANTIFA/BLM/JBGC. They created a map of who was communicating with who.
OPSEC dictates probably the best strategy is to leave your phone at home, but nothing is perfect.
I would also take the time to encrypt your phone contents and set up an actual password, not face unlock or fingerprint. If you get picked up by LEO, remember your right to not self incriminate, enumerated in the Fifth Amendment.
Food and water would be essential items to bring with you, bring plenty for yourself and some to share if you want. A small first aid kit wouldn't be a horrible idea either.
Stay together, make plans and backup plans and rally points if you get separated from your group.
God bless you and be safe. I'll meet you all there.
EDIT: the comments here have excellent suggestions, I only watched a couple DEFCON videos a few years ago about WIFI activity being intercepted for intelligence gathering purposes. Heed the advice of people more knowledgeable than myself.
Good advice but that’s not how the maps were made. You don’t actually have to connect. Your wifi just has to be on.
They used a stingray type system. It has nothing to do with wifi. Your phone is programmed to connect to the closest cell tower with the strongest signal. People hauled around a short range fake cell tower and their phones hooked into it. Your phone would have to be powered off, not just the wifi.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stingray_phone_tracker
Powering it off is not good enough. Leave it at home. Trust me
Burner Phone is the best bet for at hand comms. Your main phone should be powered off and if the battery can not be removed: a faraday type bag should be used.
Here's my problem with burner phones - yes, they can't personally identify you but even if you have a burner phone they can tag you and track your movement - so if you start out with a group and you get tagged with that group, they have a significant tactical advantage knowing where you're headed, when you're isolated, etc.
They don't need to know who you are individually, they just need to associate you with a group and track you like a flock of geese.
To the people that think they need burner phones: check out FRS / GMRS radios. You only transmit when you push PTT. As long as it's unpushed, you cannot be tracked by radio signal.
This is the correct answer. Too many people here are willing to give up all tactical and strategic advantages simply for convenience, they are unwilling to work for the good of the team... and then they wonder why we lose so much.
Downside is its open transmission of information. Anyone with a SDR can listen to anything said on any radio in the area.
*The cow is leaving the feed lot, over"
"the chair is against the door"
Bring those radios, and just transmit a lot of nonsense. Just to fuck with them.
The radios need to be an extension of other kinds of memes.
Thank you I was writing a similar reply.
We used Tech in Afghanistan to smoke Timmy Taliban constantly b/c they used cells to communicate. This was 10 years ago in late 2010-2011. Sweet
DO NOT USE CELL PHONES PEDES. don't bring them period.
Live existed only a short time ago where we existed and thrived with out them.
Most of use should be old enough to remember that.
GMRS requires an FCC license to operate. this is not a designated emergency, you do not have authority to transmit w/o a license. that being said, unlike HAM, GMRS only requires a $70 fee, it lasts 10 years, and covers your entire family, so all your kids and your wife/husband can leech off your license!
ham radio geek here, before you beat me up here, im legally correct, and your issue is not with me or the FCC, its the liberals. so please respect the airwaves, there are emcomms that will certainly take precedence over inane babbling from inexperienced operators.
MURS frequencies can be used by anyone however. Baofengs will do that.
Also for anyone reading this the HAM test only costs $15 and a few days of study. You'll probably end up spending thousands on radios and antennas however.
Still better to have a burner phone than no phone. It could save your life or at the very least help locate you if something very bad happens.
They would go to such trouble to pluck off someone carrying a burner, if you're going to do that you focus on HVT.
Dont be overly paranoid to the point you start acting irrational out of fear.
No, it's tactically better to have no phone. Let's say you rally in one location and all of the IDs are grabbed from the phones. Every ID is tagged "Trump supporter". Congratulations, now if you leave that group or divide into smaller groups, the Enemy knows that you're isolated and/or weaker than they are.
I think u/JustHereForTheSalmon had it right. If you need comms, handheld radios are better. Collect all of the phones and put them somewhere safe, then divide people into groups and hand out radios to each designated leader of the group if you don't have enough to go around. That's how I'd do it.
I completely disagree. If no one has a phone there is no video. If there is no video, Antifa lies. Always have at least one phone per group.
You're a crazy paranoid person or a potential rapist IMO.
If you are female and expect you might get separated from your friends for heavens sake buy a burner for your own safety!
Having a no phone is simply stupid and not wise advice.
I swear on everything I care about pede please listen to u/jjacksonRIAB on this one.
I personally took part in ops in Afghanistan because of the Intel we collected in the same manner. It all ended poorly for Timmy.
I'm not paranoid, I'm just a Vet that has been there done that in the other side.
Life existed prior to cell phones, just remember how we use to do things before them and you'll be golden
Yes and we intercepted sat-phone traffic. All of it. We smoked some seriously bad peeps monitoring that. Cell phones are a joke in this situation. Leave em at home. Use an atlas for navigating. Know your destination by heart and have a plan. Research is at your fingertips, use it now then leave them home.
Was it a public event with hundreds of thousands of people in attendance?
Just because it can be done, doesnt mean the average Joe should be paranoid about it to the extent they leave their phone at home putting themselves at far greater risks by not having one.
Would you rather be shoved into the trunk of a car with or without a mobile phone in your pocket?
Seriously i cant believe a vet would give such terrible advice unless you have some serious PTSD paranoia in which case what are you doing on here... you're now on an FBI watch list.. keep an eye out for vans driving past your house..
You know what else does that?
Eyeballs.
Eyeballs do not put unique identifiers on large groups of people. Eyeballs cannot track a large group of people as they move in separate groups across the city. Eyeballs do not give your physical location within 11.8 inches. Eyeballs cannot track you through walls, under bridges, or behind obstructions. Phones can.
Phreaking has gotten a lot more complicated these days. I was trying to unlock a carrier locked no contract phone, and it's ridiculous how much bullshit you have to go through just to get a clean user friendly ROM onto one. Then there are so many scammer sites trying to get your IMEI just to charge you for an unlock, that the companies should give to you freely but fight giving out with Indian tech support and things like no contract-contracts like you must have owned the phone and used it for at least a year type bullshit. Straight Talk wireless did that little number on a phone for me and made it useless, turns out it was a ZTE so good riddance anyway.
phones are required in the US to have chipsets that allow remote turn on.
Faraday bag, or leave it at home.
Rolling your phone in a few layers of tinfoil/papertowel also works.
This.
Also why I always laughed at Antifags. Wore masks, hoodies, and gloves thinking their anonymity was solid, but were dumb enough to bring their personal cell phones. I can almost guarantee you there's a registry out there for every person who ever showed up to those riots back in the summer. Leave your personal phone at home, and go get a burner phone (purchase with cash). Or just go without a phone. Not like you're going to be able to really use it for much anyways.
Yurp. Though like I said, I can ALMOST guarantee. In other words, shouldn't surprise anyone if it came out later that there was a massive data base of compiled identities. Stingray system is a bitch.
And those Antifa have now been arrested? No they haven't.
Yes, the government can probably track your phone even if it says it's off.
Let's see them use that tracking. Then they have to ADMIT it. Good luck, CIA. The second they start arresting people by using this data, people will ask for a physical off switch.
True but it would be just a little bit late then...
Would a VPN mask it?
No. VPN's don't work that way as your phone works primarily off of cellular. Systems like Stingray act as a mobile cell tower. Basically it will intercept your phone's connection, get ID info from it and pass any calls or SMS data off to the actual tower. After that it's just a matter of cross checking the ID data collected against service provider's customer registries. And voilà, they know who you are and at the very least a rough idea of when and where you were.
No.
No battery no work...
Rip apple.
It's really not, but it's likely going to be too hard on a lot of people to completely lose it's capabilities in a crowd of millions
Print maps, stay in a group, and have a rendezvous point for your group beforehand in case you get separated. I wouldn't really on a phone in DC that day. I understand what you mean but people need to learn to go low tech. The globalist "cyber pandemic" planned for 2021 is going to force us all to learn anyway
Elevation doesn’t help in Florida! LOL
Sorry—couldn’t help myself.
You can drive to your nearest Love's truck stop and drop twelve to fifteen dollars on a detailed topographical map. Heck; spend ten minutes on Duck Duck Go and you can print them out for free. As a Florida guy though, I can assuredly state that there isn't more than one hundred feet or so elevation variance on either I-10 or US 98 from Tally to Mobile. You could drive all the way to Houston or Dallas and not change your altitude by more than two or three hundred feet.
We've gotten good topographical maps from the Forest Service or National Parks, but they're usually of the park/surrounding areas (which is what we were after). I don't know if they would have other areas, but it might be a source anyway.
Um dude the highest hill in FL is only 345 feet. And that’s way up in the panhandle. After that it’s easy to know. Is there water? If so below sea level. If not then maybe 20’ up
Explore the DC area using Google Street View over the next few weeks.
Thank you for the great idea. I used atlases many times as a kid and needed this reminder. Thanks again.
True. I'm thinking more for smaller groups that traveled together to get there, it's a good idea not to get separated.
Cell networks will probably be overloaded or required to shut down by some three letter agency. But the other capabilities (Wifi, bluetooth would be good to have)
We should be using multiple apps. And communicating among our own groups about what we are using so that the government does not hack the websites and insert malicious code to spy on users. Install and run several apps (including some not listed), this likely won't use much more battery. Get a high-capacity battery bank for your phones, Amazon sells these.
Download and try out the apps in advance. Because Google, Apple, and the sites may be taken down during protests. Google and Apple can make up whatever reason to not allow the app anymore, but they can't delete it off your phone. (Some of these you will have to install the app from the website)
There is this (Android) app: http://servalproject.org/
This one looks quite promising: https://briarproject.org/ (Android only)
A hardware solution (proprietary) is the GoTenna, but those are expensive (>$150) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GoTenna
And these: https://www.reddit.com/r/privacytoolsIO/comments/cpfpqf/what_p2pmeshmultihop_messaging_apps_are_available/ https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/5alhhc/any_encrypted_messaging_app_without_internet/ https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/gtmdk8/best_mesh_networked_messaging_app_for_if_cell/ https://fossbytes.com/offline-messaging-apps/ https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.bridgefy.main&hl=en_US&gl=US https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.raxis.signalapp&hl=en_US&gl=US https://mashtips.com/android-offline-messaging-apps/ https://beebom.com/best-offline-messaging-apps-run-without-internet/ https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.alexkang.bluechat/ https://f-droid.org/en/packages/info.guardianproject.gilga/ https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.remaller.android.wifitalkie_lite&hl=en_US&gl=US http://smartmesh.io/ https://www.geckoandfly.com/22562/chat-without-internet-connection-mesh-network/ https://github.com/deib-polimi/PigeonMessanger https://www.reddit.com/r/privacytoolsIO/comments/c3rfc3/best_mesh_network_messaging_app_for_protests/ https://gizmodo.com/how-mesh-messaging-apps-work-and-why-you-might-need-on-1837859615
I'd still recommend low-tech. Radios, and hard copy maps.
To the millennials... pay close attention to how the map is folded. Because you will never figure out how to refold it without that.
Reminds me of something I just saw. We could shutdown the millennials by using cursive and driving stick shifts lol
smoke signals.
Bring a blanket.
Maps.me for 100% offline maps
What about one of the wallets that blocks scanning? Does that do any good?
Just wrap it in tinfoil, should work the same.
Theres a reason that tinfoil hat meme exists, because radio waves can be generally reflected by tin foil.
Edit: https://youtu.be/asmbgAeJqis hey I havent tested this, but some people on youtube seem to have. It seems like it could work or not based on a bunch of variables. Probably better to just keep the phone off or to lay it on thick if youre going to try it.
You havent actually tried this have you?
The amount of foil required is ridiculous and impractical. Dont believe me? Go wrap your phone in several layers and have a friend call it.
Not all metals are the same and there is more going on in terms of physics with a Faraday cage than 'thick piece of ungrounded metal should stop it'
Are you using tinfoil or aluminum foil?
This is not true. It has almost nothing to do with the thickness. Currents travel close to the surface of the conductor, called skin depth.
It has everything to do with the ratio of the wavelength to the aperture diameters. Basically gaps in the tinfoil. The waves need to be able to have a hole / gap / aperture to enter through. Any gap needs to be smaller than the wavelength. No gaps at all means you are good.
You also do not need a ground strap or multiple layers of foil.
Simply wrap your phone in tinfoil and crimp out any holes where the foil meets itself. Wrap the phone in an insulator first so it doesn’t touch the foil. So, a layer of paper towel and then a layer of tinfoil with no gaps.
Look at any commercial faraday bag. A layer of fine metal mesh. Look at the door of your microwave. A fine mesh embedded in the glass. A single mesh hole is the aperture size you should not exceed. The rule of thumb is that the aperture should be no more than 1/10th the wavelength.
Try it at home. Wrap your phone properly, turn the ringer volume up and have someone call the phone.
Indeed try it and you'll realize how much of an amateur physicist you are.. foil isnt some impenetrable element..with or without holes :)
Nah honestly I havent tried it. I just know those waves reflect off of metal, even in the visible spectrum its why your phone stops working when you walk in an elevator and why you see your reflection in tin foil. Always made sense to me. But if you've wrapped your phone in aluminum foil and tried it youre ahead of me bro.
He is not correct. See my response below.
Am physicist, can confirm concept works.
Was doing a research project a while back for a new sensor material & in order to block/break up random transmitted waves from interfering with our sensitive signal testing setup, we just wrapped the whole thing in a dome of crinkled aluminum foil like you find at the grocery store
Expensive experiment, yet cheap solution; worked like a charm.
Never tried it with my phone, though.
The concept is valid, im not saying Faraday cages dont work or that you cant make one from foil - it can be done. This isnt some physics forum discussing concepts and building ghetto Faraday cages though :)
As i already said people should just simply try it sheesh!
In practicality terms for the purposes of attending a rally simply grabbing a bit of thin fragile foil and wrapping your phone in it should not be a recommended solution if you are that paranoid. It does attenuate weaker wifi signals quite well, lesser so for the much stronger cell signals - where most people will go wrong especially if you're attending a rally is the wrapping/unwrapping all day and leakage.
Not to mention the optics of doing such a thing, dont tell me someone unwrapping/wrapping their phone covered in foil isnt going to raise an eye brow or two. Thats far more likely to gain you attention from the wrong people than being secretly tracked because you're a Trump supporter at a public event with thousands of people attending.
As other people have mentioned just BUY AN ACTUAL POUCH if you are that paranoid and want peace and mind. They arent expensive and is more practical / durable.
Or dont and look like a weirdo wrapping your phone in foil because a physicist online confirmed the concept works :)
Cell signals can go through one layer of tinfoil. There are special bags for this that work better.
you made up some bullshit and posted it online like you know what you are talking about
I'm a physicist & have actually used this as a cheap solution during experimental testing (see above comment), so I can assure you this is not made up BS at all... It's an actual working concept.
If you have a huge wallet, maybe. I'd stick with a Faraday pouch
I have a faraday pouch from Tarriss. works great
you can still broadcast out through those
here is a faraday bag
Thank you!
Just turn on airplane mode, buy a burner if you want extra comfort, dont listen to all the tin foil hat people.
If you're paranoid about being tracked to the point you're not going to carry a phone why bother going at all, you'll just be walking around looking shifty with no way to call for help if you need it.
airplane mode can still be pinged by a stingray you really think your spyphones are made so that you can click a button and be completely hidden?
do you seriously work for the democrat CIA? because every one of your posts sound like the biggest fucking shill ever.
There is a reason why no cell phones in the US are allowed to be sold with a physical cut off switch for such things as microphone. Even pulling batteries out doesn't even truly turn them off.
Lots of people here are being soy about the operational security aspects being brought up without realizing this may be the beginning of an actual civil conflict and many people may be isolated hurt or locked up. Being picked off like wounded animals because they know you are alone is not something you want to happen.
Leave your phones at home/hotel. Carry no electronics if you can help it.
this is not correct. show me where it says that "no cell phones in the US are allowed to be sold with a physical cut off switch for such things as microphones".
oh wait a sec, here's onethat has physical hardware killswitches for not just microphone, but also bt, wifi, gps, cell data, AND camera.
Says the new account .. yes be more paranoid about carrying a burner phone you'll use for the day because you'll be tracked and and a sniper will take you out with ice bullets.. rather than a creepy perv simply stalking you all day, notifying you arent carrying a phone and shoving you into the trunk of a car... ffs which is more likely seriously
How will I take sick selfies though?
There is no turning off phones unless the battery is dead they only go in to stand by mode.
exactly. people think they control their phones. hilarious.
Good thing for my device I have a hardware switch for the Quectel in it.
Librem 5?
That's what it sounds like... only phone I know of that has switches for both the wifi/bt card and the cell card.
Believe it or not, there are some ways to detect a stingray connection. Either way, if you utilize full end-to-end encryption they can't read shit. Think solid VPNs (usually paid for, although not always), and fully encrypted messaging apps. Everyone you're communicating with needs to be on the same app, though.
All the more reason to leave it shut off in the car trunk.
Commie blok
Just buy a cheap handheld radio and decide on a channel with whoever you're with.
Use callsigns, and stay safe.
Don't those only have like 16 channels though? I have to imagine there will be at least 16 other groups peppering those channels.
I'd love to be near the rally with an SDR just to see the chaos!
dude, a uv-5x3 is a fucking toy radio for real. those cheap chinese pieces of shit are going to break on you. they have zero drop tolerance, and they operate out of band. the last thing real hams need is a bunch of unlicensed operators clogging up the airwaves, stick to FRS, leave the actual ham bands free for emcomms and triaging.
if you're going to get an entry level radio, pick up a [yaesu ft4xr(https://www.amazon.com/Yaesu-FT-4XR-Dual-HandHeld-Transceiver/dp/B07DCYGV1W) for a few dollars more. you're welcome.
You can get a uv-5r for $30 and have access to the full spectrum.
I’d recommend midland gmrs walkies. You can get a 2 pack for like $60 at most sports stores. Used for hunting but would work here. There are more than 16 channels on the mid tier ones and literally 100’s of people can be on the same channel (without hearing each other) if you use DVS or CTCSS codes. It’s easy - you just set each radio to the same channel, and same code.
GMRS requires a license, stick to FRS, plenty of channels and you can still use DCS tones for "private" comms.
hint: its not actually private
this is not a declared emergency, you cant transmit on frequencies you are not designated to operate on, respect the airwaves, there is going to be actual important emcomms and triaging going on in the ham/gmrs bands.
Even cheap CB’s have 40 channels. Discuss ahead of time which channels you will use (some are more heavily trafficked by others)
Have codes for the channels you will switch between, each member of your party and encode most information you pass over the radio.
Making up your own slang is a great code for short duration.
Stay on the odd channels, start at the bottom, and switch every time....
Full neck mask, sunglasses and hats.
it's been a decade since they had the ability to identify you by your gait and a hundred other metrics that don't require one inch of your face.
covering your face just makes it harder for non-intelligence agencies and normies on twitter to identify you. which has a value but... you're being tracked irregardless. so keep that in mind.
Just wear two different shoes, or add in 2 of those dr shoals things. Face recognition can be thrown off with a loose fitting face diaper. Wear a wig. But everyone needs to remember there’s going to be tens of thousands of us there. And we are safer in numbers. Keep your head on a swivel and be aware of your surroundings. Plan out at least 2 escape routes from wherever you happen to be standing. DC does have a subway system for escape to. And take two rolls of quarters instead of guns. Put that in your hand give someone a love tap, or put them in a tube sock and now u have a decent weapon.
Uh, that's bullcrap sir. If there's ten thousand people in a crowd every single one of them will be tracked by their gait? It would be way easier to track their cellphones, which at least half the crowd will be carrying.
Even then, if they do track thousands of people, what exactly are they going to do about it? Arrest all of them, fill the jail cells until they can't arrest any more, and deal with the political fallout as thousands of protesters turn into millions?
Yes, it's important to disable the always on location and wifi scanning ("location services")
https://www.howtogeek.com/211186/how-to-disable-google-location-wi-fi-scanning-on-android/
Right - best answer If you’re suspicious about people monitoring your location/phone activity is buy a burner with cash at a box store on route to DC and DO NOT take your day to day device with you.
If you DO use biometric security on your phone, and you ever get pulled over by police, knows this:
A) You CAN be forced to provide biometric data to unlock it. Knowing this...
B) Hold the power button and turn off your phone (after recording anything/before handing over). When it restarts, it will require your password, which you CANNOT be forced to provide.
Thank you for this. I had no idea that biometrics could be forced. This is great info!
Yes. Courts have interpreted that kind of information is not protected under the 4th amendment right to privacy in unreasonable searches and seizures or under the 5th amendment right to abstain from self-incrimination.
However, a number password is not something they can force you to do. Just remember, the only way they can make you is if you agree, or rather, "consent". Never do that.
Except in this case, in which they will probably find that you have no standing under the constitution or use the latches doctrine meaning you took too long to not have your rights infringed.
You should have infringed your right before you left the airport.next.
Many phones on current OS have the feature to hold the lock/power button and get a lock option to require password. Strips biometrics. An extra layer is making a SIM PIN, which is only needed upon restart. The pin doesn't even need to be crazy secure, just enough to keep someone out.
This was my first thought
also, newer phones have an option you can turn on for a 4th power option where it disables non-password entry until after next sign in.
I set mine up to lock and require password if I press the power button 5 times in quick succession.
Get fucked FBI
How about don't bring your personal cell phone or devices at all for that matter. I'm not a tech guy but I know from reports years ago there's fake cell towers in DC that make your phone think its a tower and pings information back and forth to it as if it were a real tower.
Yes. Burner phones are incredibly useful for many types of ops, especially my special work in the heart of commie country.
Us patriots will truly be deep behind enemy lines on January the 6th. Those of us who live in blue states are already occupied and behind enemy lines nevertheless.
They can still be used to track groups of people and know when you are isolated. That can be used to grab people or tell hit teams (antifa) to attack then. It would be better to leave any electronics at home/hotel or if you have to carry such devices coordinate PTT (radios) with a group of people. Find people you trust (off site) and organize.
Absolutely. It'd be foolhardy to not have a way to communicate with others in a hurry, especially in case of an absolute emergency.
Stingray devices
Faraday bags for your phone if you feel better just having it with you in case of an emergency.
https://mosequipment.com/collections/keyfob-and-phone-faraday-bags/products/mission-darkness-small-non-window-faraday-bag
Tinfoil and aluminum foil wraps if you dont get this in time.
Use a Faraday pouch to silence all signals, including GPS.
Dont trust them. I have 3 and two of them have randomly permitted recieving text msg. Get a burner with removqble battery.
I second this. I read that microwave ovens blocked cell signals too, my phone still rang.
They block better when they're on. Just a few minutes on high will do.
How long should I expect the residual blocking to be in effect? #asking4Afriend
you have to push the 'popcorn' button.
It's a secret code.
You have to turn on the microwave.
That's "Stingray"
Leave your personal phones at home and only use a burner if necessary.
Use cash, should be obvious.
Should be, but really does need to be said.
If you ever attended a DEFCON convention, you would leave there wanting to live in a log cabin in the middle of the woods, all inside a faraday cage. Never to touch anything remotely electronic, ever.
Dude...DEFCON...
Wasn't expecting it to be that crazy though
Was so sad it got canceled (for real!) this year.
Cell service is often blocked for certain thiings there too.
based on experience cell service will be completely jammed. happens all the time during cherry blossom
This, grab a uv5r radio while u still can. Im not an expert on which frequencies are permissable so tread carefully....or get your HAM license....
none of the frequencies are permissible if you don't have a license! this is not a declared emergency, so you cannot transmit unlicensed! i cannot stress this point enough!
licensed ham here, important emcomms will be taking place, as well as triaging, so if you truly care about the cause, understand that more technical people will need these bands free to communicate important information. dont think of it as "i'll never get caught, who cares?", think of it more as "this will negatively affect our communications, and could weaken our collective strength as a group, better let the professionals be in control".
i have no issues with you getting into ham radio, but we take a test and operate under very strict rules for a reason. if you buy a ham radio, please DO NOT TRANSMIT, it is a serious crime, and WILL cause issues with important emcomms taking place.
and last note: if you MUST buy a ham radio, spend a few extra dollars and buy the Yaesu FT4XR. people keep recommending cheap shitty chinese baofeng radios. yes, they are cheaper, but they are brittle, made of crap plastic, operate out of band, and are just overall garbage. why support CCP products? they are the reason we are in this mess in the first place. dont buy commie junk.
FRS?
i stands for family radio service. think of those 2 way walkies you can buy at a sporting goods store. usually midland or uniden makes them. almost all ham radio HT's (handhelds) are limited to 5W. frs are limited to 2W. instead of using VFOs, FRS radios use "channels" which are basically different preset frequencies.
there is DCS/CTCSS for if you want private chats, but understand that anyone with enough time to kill can scan each channel and DCS combination until they find the one you are using for comms, so the safe bet is to just assume anything you say is being listened to by hundreds of other people, thats what us hams do!
tl;dr, if you arent a licensed ham, just buy an FRS radio, and let the professionals deal with the ham bands. 2W can go pretty damn far, its all dependent on you surroundings, altitude, band saturation, and electrical noise. i hope this helps.
Likely even just too much traffic. I've been to concerts and can't even send a text less than a minute.
I had it happen at the Capitals' Stanley Cap Championship for a while, both the WiFi and Cell service were slow for a bit (There were over 120,000 of us right around the arena).
Can always buy a cheap burner phone for $30
edit: tracfone from target is just $20 and you can buy a prepaid minutes card as well for another $20
But that phone can be traced back to you if you don't know what you're doing.
I'm not saying to register it to the phone company on a false name and address, but look into that stuff.
Metro PCS & Crickett both require no i.d and you can pay in cash.
It probably also wouldn't be a bad idea to purchase a burner outside of your local area and take a few minutes to get used to the phone. Don't program any numbers in it either. Only use the burner phone to connect to other burner phones in your group at the rally.
Also, have a bit of a limp, nothing exaggerated. Just enough to throw off gait recognition.
You can put a stone in your shoe. I learned that from "The Knowhow book of Spycraft" but it seems appropriate. You can probably only do this for a limited time before blisters develop though.
You guys all sound paranoid to me.
Dollar General sells Tracfones & minutes. Plenty of DGs on the way to DC.
Just wear your full face coverings & pay in cash! Activate the phone from a payphone or some small business's phone, like a laundromat. (I've been gangstalked. I know some shit...)
Also, make sure you get a phone with a removable battery. Don't forget! You can remove Sim cards, too, to stop unwanted transmission.
Gang stalked? Story time?
That's way better.
Pay cash.
If they demand a card, buy a card with cash and use that.
If someone tells you you can use theirs, make them give you their win name and verify their account is active for more than a few weeks.
how do you do that without a phone?
Cell service?
nevermind i misunderstood
You guys are retarded. Don't make this event more difficult to join. We will have a few million people, and Chaz had a few hundred people. The scale is way too different to even care. Nobody cannot monitor and make any kind of judgement of a communication of million people. Only people who really need to be screte should be careful about this type of thing, and they alredy know that. You guys are making it more and more difficult for normies to join the event.
You don't need a phone for this event. There, problem solved.
millon people with no phone? Give me a break. This event is not an event with a few thousands. If that's the case, we are fucked anyway.
You can tell who was born after 1980 where they have no concept of living without a phone. They will go to their own deaths clutching their phones.
I think cell phones are a huge contributor to the downfall of society. If I could magically make them cease to exist, I would. I was born after 1980.
I would absolutely have my phone on me to record illegal commy / police behavior.
Bad things could happen if you get lost or separated from your friends which is a real possibility without a phone.
This should be top comment.
No, that same retard is saying elsewhere that nobody should bring guns.
You know, I actually agree with you here. I was reading through this and kind of getting demotivated. We need people more than security. Ultimately just remember what Ben Franklin said, "Those who would trade freedom for security deserve neither freedom or security".
Pretty sure CHAZ had a few dozen at most. There may have been a few hundred during the protests that led up to it, but there's no way they had a few hundred on any kind of consistent basis.
I could swear there are some here intentionally giving bad advice so people DONT have a phone and put their safety at far more risk than this paranoid "they gunna track me an kill me when my back is turned" bs.
If you're worried, buy a burner. Simple. Stop with the tracking to kill nonsense.
I never said tracking isnt real.
Causing fear mongering and paranoia so people dont take a phone to a public event where hundreds of thousands of people will be attending is harmful and puts far more people at risk.
If you're a female you have greater risk of being kidnapped and murdered by not having a phone than having one and being tracked.
Maybe GEOTUS should use the Dem mayors' playbook. Order the glowies to stand down against MAGA "peaceful protestors."
IIRC, the president can declare an emergency in DC making him effectively the governor of DC as of it were a state.
In Florida everyone can carry a firearm without a CCW during an emergency, maybe Trump can executive order an emergency with this stipulation lol
There is essentially no legal way to bring a gun to DC. Even residents have to jump through hoops to have one in their homes.
If there aren't enough people to totally outnumber local law enforcement then an armed march is going to end badly.
I wouldn't be surprised if "concealed means concealed" won't apply in DC, with some of the millimeter wave scanners that have started popping up (Amazon HQ supposedly has one in the area outside their entrance).
Not saying don't go armed, exactly, just plan ahead.
The prosecutor will throw the book at any peacefully armed patriots.
I had to look up JBGC.
Does anyone know if they study tactics and train?
These guys don't seem like German-born Pantifa or BLM. They're quieter and seem like they mean more business.
It's who murdered just about everyone in CHAZ, along with that guy who tried the firebomb the ICE facility last year.
Probably a few are ex-military.
That's what I'm thinking too. These guys have piqued my attention much more than the other groups - that's for sure.
They're well armed retards but retards nonetheless.
Don't act like that manlet Kyle smoked and you should be fine.
A true terrorist group they are.
This is why we need local .wins to meet in person
As a law student I'd like to reiterate a great point you bring up.
Never, ever talk to the police. If you are arrested and get mirandized, you need to UNEQUIVICALLY invoke your right to silence and your right to counsel. They are RIGHTS.
"I invoke my right to counsel under the 6th amendment and my right to silence under the 5th"
Questioning must cease when you do that. But for the love of God, do NOT speak again. Talking after that point can be interpreted to be waiving your rights and statements made against you can possibly be admitted into evidence. Hell, even if they violate your right to counsel or silence and you say something like "I have never touched a gun" they can STILL use that to impeach your credibility on the stand even though they can't enter it into direct evidence.
Pedes may need to locate an attorney who can be trusted and is licensed to practice in the D.C. area. A random assignment from the local public defender's office can and will screw you over.
If you are "detained" that is not "under arrest" but you still can't leave.
-Not an expert, so everyone should do their own google.
But: it's "am I being detained, or am I free to go?" -- if there's probable cause to stop you (someone saw XXX description, around the corner .. and you match), then they can detain you for questions, don't have to make an arrest.
-The cops are not your friend. They are not going to be chatting you up to grab beers. Stop incriminating yourself. Stop making statements to be used against you in court. And if a cop keeps asking the same question .. particularly with "different phrasing" they are really trying to find an inconsistency to peg you.
Incorrect but right idea. You have to ask if you're being detained. If you aren't THEN you can walk. But if you use arrest the guy could say no (but in his mind he's detaining you) and you walk he then tackles you and sticks you with some bullshit charge.
If he says you are detained, ask him/her what is the reasonable suspicion supported by specific and articulable facts indicating criminal violation of the law? Reasonable suspicion is a relatively low standard, but detention cannot be due to a hunch, nonspecific suspicion, or carrying a legal firearm. See brown v texas, deberry v us, delaware v prouse, and terry v ohio.
It depends. If police have a reasonable suspicion of wrongdoing, they can briefly detain you to confirm or dispel their suspicions in what it called a Terry stop. In a situation like that, you are not under arrest, but you are not free to leave.
Generally, things are more nuanced than how they are portrayed on TV. Just make sure not to incriminate yourself and never consent to a search. If arrested, invoke your rights and stay quiet.
If they engage in those practices, the evidence obtained by it is generally inadmissible. My advice stands.
You're a law student, not a lawyer. You're in no position to offer legal advice to anyone.
You're a shitposter on the donald, you in no position to counter my actual advice after studying the actual cases and material.
If you have to carry your phone:
Touch Id / Passcode
No one says you have to use a thumb or index finger for touch id. You've probably got a few others you can use.
At least on iOS (Apple) you can program the phone start wiping the phone after a 10 fails. Android probably has the same. Remember what the Mueller investigators did. Backup before the trip if you want your data back. Use a throwaway phone if you can.
Radio/RF Emissions
If you don't turn the phone off completely, such as to take videos, you might turn off Wifi, Bluetooth and even Cellular if you don't need them. Bear in mind if you have other devices on you like Tile (Keychain) tags they may be beaconing a Bluetooth signal.
Keep electronic devices in Faraday pouches.
A cheap digital camera to record the proceedings seems like a good idea.
Tin foil does not work. If it does work, it is very unreliable. Tin foil does block cell signals if there are zero gaps. There will not be zero gaps. Use a faraday pouch or bag.
Where are all these crazy BS ppl coming from.
Go wrap your phone in foil and have a friend call it before believing this.
The amount of foil required to achieve the desired effect is impractical and will make you look like the paranoid fool that you are.
Dont do this! Dont believe me? Try it!
Wear a mask so you don’t get facially recognized
might be the single advantage of the COVID mess
These might be useful: https://www.reflectacles.com/
Blocks IR & visible light by reflection, Makes iris scans and facial recognition nonfunctional.
Most materials are already IR opaque.
Facial recognition software can ID you even with a mask. Ensure you obscure your eyes
The other benefit of eye shielding is when some Antifag with a concrete milkshake shows up, it's harder to blind you.
Pretty sure everyone on thedonald is already on that list. They could easily ask cloudflare or the NSA for IP addresses.
Pretty sure I am already on the FBI list lol. I've got random women hitting me up on discord.
That entire city is covered, wall to wall, with spoofed cell phone receivers for any kind of malware man in the middle attack, etc. you care to imagine. All the embassies and half the 17 or 19 spy agencies are likely always sniffing the airwaves. This is part of why these motherfuckers feel so invulnerable. Bring the heaters. Bring the megaphones. I recommend a folding kickscooter - gay as it sounds, it is weapon if it needs to be and a means of getting around without too much fatigue on paved roads. They cost almost nothing and can be treated as disposable. Also travel way better than a lot of more expensive transportation devices.
It wasn't WiFi. It was fake towers. As long as your phone was using mobile data, they got the information.
The number of Rusty Shacklefords registering phones just went through the roof.
OPSEC says leave phone behind. Safety and security says bring a phone in case you need help. If u want, go get a burner phone.
PERSEC too, just watch what you communicate over your device and post, and you should be fine. It's one thing to ditch your phone when being specifically hunted down, but the biggest concern here in a crowd should be chatter filters trying to single out threats. Tens of thousands of users engaging in inane chatter is an everyday occurrence in Downtown D.C., not even noteworthy IMO. They can't tell by your location alone whether you're protesting, rioting, observing, there for work, or just being a regular tourist, so I wouldn't be too worried about that.
FYI, people need to really utilize full end-to-end encryption if they want to communicate in private. Signal is solid, but everyone you're messaging needs to be on it and utilizing the keys. VPNs can also help, especially over WiFi traps.
Basically, if you're communicating operational matters then also consider not doing so to anyone within your immediate circle, and utilize full encryption methods. If communicating with family or those within your immediate circle, just keep it kosher as much as possible. It's great to let your family/immediate circle know when and where you expect to be, and that you're okay, a simple check-in to ensure safety.
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR FUCKING PHONE AT HOME GOD DAMMIT
VIDEO EVERYTHING
DONT BE A DUMBASS
Bring handycams.
Phones are convenient, but if you're at all concerned about leaving as small of a footprint as you can IF you are doing something that could get you arrested, they will give you up quicker than a crackhead police informant.
Get the highest resolution camera you can, 4k+ HDR would probably catch more details than a basic SD camera. And they aren't that big, even gopro (small stunt camera) has that.
That's a good idea, but keep in mind just how important livestreaming is both for exposure and also the ability to have your footage saved to a remote server which cannot be destroyed right there.
Every pawnshop has used phones. Just don't register with a cell provider. Good for pics/videos Wifi when you need to connect. Cheap.
I sill have a tiny hand held camcorder. Safer and just as good at catching turds flying
Probably
I know. Why should I leave my phone at home when I registered a hotel in my name and credit card already? Seems pointless.
I see what you're saying now. Yea, I wouldn't put it past these people to set up false evidence for the entire population that shows up.
Shouldn't even use your cell phone police and 3 letters use a device that mimics a tower
They probably have whatever is the next level beyond a stingray.
If you don't have your own router that you flash OpenWRT onto to set up your own VPN and DNS resolution before you connect to public hotspots I am going to look at you weird.
Would a vpn app on your phone like PIA work?
Use one based in a non-NSA friendly country, ideally. Use openVPN, the highest level encryption.
Okay thank you pede!
I always read Torrentfreak's annual review of VPN companies to compare their data-retention policies, etc. A few I trusted in the past (though not for anything like a protest) are AirVPN (run by "hacktivists" in Italy), Mullvad (Sweden), and ipredator (run by pirate bay cofounder Peter Sunde, "ipred" being a data retention policy in EU), cryptostorm (based in Iceland). PIA could be subject to National Security Letters as they are US based.
You can check your VPN security on https://dnsleaktest.com/ And http://ipleak.net/
Another service is JonDoNym (JonDos), a tor-like, paid service based in Germany (administration/development) that is multihop and open source, running your data through several servers. They have a browser JondoFox that is a special version of firefox configured to remove non-IP metadata. You can combine it with vpn https://anonymous-proxy-servers.net/ is their website.
would XVPN be a good VPN to use? just curious
ABSOLUTELY NOT.
I really don't get it, why people keep sacrificing their freedoms and liberties for paltry "conveniences" they can obtain for themselves for a few measly dollars.
A lot of us aren’t tech savvy, hell using a free vpn is better than what most people do. Having said that, can you eli5 how to do this? Can I run to the store and buy the necessary equipment? I’ll shell out the money but am not tech savvy and connecting to a vpn app on my phone is about as savvy as I get.
There are already a lot of tutorials about turning old enterprise laptops thrown out by businesses and donated to Goodwill into routers with open-source software.
https://www.geckoandfly.com/24015/router-os-enterprise-network-switch
1st result I got through search.
For real, how are people so afraid of free and low-cost options?
Awesome thanks. I don’t think people are afraid so much as not understanding the tech behind it. Keep in mind many people didn’t grow up in the smartphone/internet generation.
TLDR: A VPN service won't prevent the D.C. authorities or anyone else from finding out your phone was there.
The WiFi tracking that was done against Antifa was done before the traffic reached the VPN service, in the 'first mile' from your phone to the wireless base station or access point (WAP). They used fake WAPs and saved data that normally would be discarded after a while.
Your phone's Wifi and Bluetooth have a unique MAC address. It transmits it each time it wants something from the Internet. It tends to spray this unique number all over the place often. (Oversimplified here.)
Looking at the MAC address is like looking at envelope return addresses without looking inside.
A VPN still has a couple of features, but less than the marketing department wants you to believe. I'm going to turn you over to Tom Scott who has already explained this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVDQEoe6ZWY (8 minute video) (TLDW: Save your money unless you are in a corner case.)
Awesome, thanks!
but thats just the thing, using a free vpn is not better. if you're using a free vpn, assume your data is being intercepted, because it most likely is. just like with anything on the internet, if the product is free, YOU ARE THE PRODUCT (i.e. your data).
seriously, i dont know how people dont realize this by 2020. if i were you, i would just check out protonvpn or mullvad. protonvpn is pretty idiot-proof, and they have a package deal where you can buy a 2 year subscription to protonvpn AND protonmail (encrypted email).
you dont buy any physical "equipment", its all software-based. if you need simpilicity and you need something to work, this pede recommends protonvpn. but like others have said, a vpn will not really be applicable anyway, since they are using stingray devices rather than wifi pineapples.
ProtonVPN is legit
VPN is like $3.50 a month, if you are going to travel to DC that is the least of your expenses. PIA accounts work great for all kinds of other stuff to, like getting around geoblocked content on the web. $39 a year.... best money you'll ever spend online.
I don't trust them because they have relations with Tesonet.
And authentication to ensure you aren't connecting to the router next to yours.
Bonus points if your SSID says something about pineapples. Or Trevor the Cockroach.
That's... not how that worked at all with people collecting data on Antifa. They used a stingray system and it had nothing at all to do with wifi, your phone just had to be near one.
Stingray's collect based on IMEI serial number which is burned into the chip of each phone and non changeable, not WIFI MAC addresses because Android started randomising those.
Stingrays do not collect WIFI info, changing SIM card does not work, the best solution is to buy a prepaid Android phone WITH CASH at a retailer and set it up on a burner Google account AFTER you left your house. Don't setup the burner Google account on your home WiFi or your home IP address will be associated with it.
Then update the OS and install Signal, and set all your messages on Signal to expire.
Make the burner Gmail at the library, thanks to covid we can wear a mask.
As for clothes...
Buy an outfit that nobody else can connect to you.
Say I don't wear plaid, your cover outfit contains a plaid shirt. You always wear jeans? Wear cargo pants or khakis for your covert outfit. Sports ball baseball cap you normally wear? Wear the opposing teams hat.
Everyone knows I love Team A to death, they wouldn't suspect it's me wearing a Team B hat. Even if they get your friends and family your friends and fam can't ID you
it doesn't matter if you are connected to WiFi or not... police are using this technology known as Stingray phone tracker to intercept any form of communications
Stingray has nothing to do with WiFi. It also is pretty limited in terms of range and how many they have. They're expensive units and they need a warrant to intercept any traffic. Not that they wouldn't do things without a warrant...
Stingray is old tech. I'm sure DC has much more impressive stuff nowadays.
Good point.
Download WiFi Privacy Police to help keep track of spoofed connections. Beware of Stingray and similar tech.
Okay....let's be real....bathrooms can be an issue in crowds like this. 🚫🚽🚫 No shame in wearing a bladder control pad, with a spare along. You stand up types might hang on to any empty bottle. Consider practicing use without whipping it out. While an antifa wouldn't get arrested for exposure, bet a pede would.
Bring TP.
and then drive from TX to FL like that female astronaut
Squatting and taking a dump in some bureaucrat’s backyard sounds like a victory.
When I was a young fella and lived in DC, I used to take pride in checking off the list of embassies I pissed on after nights of drinking out in Adam's Morgan. I would always say "HEY EVERYBODY! I JUST PISSED ALL THE WAY FROM DC TO ECUADOR!". Of course, these days, I'm sure you'd get tazed, beaten, and thrown on the sex offender list.
Ha Ha. Cave divers, and anyone doing decompression in a dry-suit, use an external catheter. Basically, a heavy gauge condom with a hose attached. Brings back memories.....
Consider a Faraday enclosure for your phone. These are pouches with metallic shielding. No signal of any kind gets through including GPS.
Hide your face with paint to conceal your identity from facial recognition technology. Search for "facial recognition makeup". Basically you want to trick CCTV cameras by adding contrast to your face in irregular places. Examples include dark squares on your cheeks, a diagonal stripe between your eyes, et al. Even if you have a burner phone, the three letters have your face if you have ever had a social media profile.
Why do so many of you want to hide your identity? Spell it out exactly what you expect a doxxing would do. Get fired for supporting the president? Organs coming to your door to drag you off to camps? You've got guns at home to protect you from a lot of bullshit.
Do you ever see Trump hiding his face?
Stand tall and proud without fear.
I get where you are coming from, but realize that technology has made it nearly impossible to be a truly private citizen in this county. This is only a suggestion for those that want to maintain their privacy and it's good for you to be aware of the three letters' capabilities
Be sure to wipe them down, no fingerprints. Or take the battery out (fire hazard) and drop them in some caustic substance (?)
Get this to the top
A pocket faraday cage would also be a good investment. I made mine from tight woven brass mesh for sculpture armature.
Link?
If you see an access point called "HRC's Secret Bathroom Server" the password is "Password"
If you see an access point for "Big Guy's Tabulator" the password is "trunalimunumaprzure"
Use a good VPN, and Signal.
Make sure to set messages to expire in 1 minute to 1 hour on Signal.
Purchase a burner flip phone with cash.
PUT YOUR PHONES ON AIRPLANE MODE BEFORE YOU EVEN GET TO DC
ONLY TURN AIRPLANE MODE OFF TO MAKE ESSENTIAL CALLS
PLAN YOUR ROUTE AHEAD OF TIME
PRINT MAPS TO CHOOSE ALTERNATE ROUTES ON THE FLY
this is garbage advice and you dont know what you're talking about. and turn off caps lock, you look like a fool.
Also remember dont waltz around looking like a putz with your phone in your hands trying to film everything like the zombie left. We are there to be WILD not be texting and streaming larpers.
Bodycams, perhaps?
Unlimited data gang
Signal FTW
Burner smartphones are cheap. Nice burners like the Moto G are on Amazon for $70 - $180. Use a VPN when going online even on hotel and airport WiFi. Get a prepaid sim from a local mobile vendor.
Get a flip phone and a body cam
Except everyone is going to have their phone and be using them to coordinate. Only very few will use radios.
Bring programable short wave radios.
you arent going to pick up shit with a SW radio in DC. you need a long ass wire antenna to pick up anything, nevermind all the electrical noise you are going to pick up from being in a giant city with lights and wireless radios everywhere.
Actually, need to be concerned about having your phone on you at all. The police have a “stingray” device that impersonates a normal cell tower. Your phone connects to it and they know that you’re there. They’re only supposed to be used on an active warrant, do you expect them to respect the law?
Burner phones
Masks are bullshit for covid but it’s a tool to use against the left. If these fucks wanna try to dox protest attendees, or the alphabets wanna track you down and arrest you in your rural Wyoming cottage, make it hard for them to identify you. Face masks and ski goggles. Protect your faces
I don't like the idea of masks, but we may not have a choice. Antifa will wear them. If we don't that gives them the advantage since they can't be tracked for later arrest when they start fights.
I read "protect your feces" and thought that was the most PC way of sayin' to protect yourself.
