Honestly, it's in Putin's, and Russia's, best interest to have a strong patriotic, nationalist and powerful USA around. We have more in common with Russia's major political party than the EU, and so do most EU citizens funny enough. Russia knows the USA is a good trade partner and a potential ally against China.

Russia has to walk a tightrope here. It cannot be too friendly to China because China covets the mineral wealth of Siberia and Russia's only warm water port, Vladivostok. That's why they look to India to jointly develop weapons and trade. India cannot afford to lose a Russian partner (not an official ally) and vice versa. Neither of the two can allow China and the US to become allies.

Great analysis, and very true.

I read somewhere in the past that Mao's vision was centered around world domination, something to do with the Han Chinese man reigning over all as an overlord. It's a terrifying thought. It's too bad Taiwan didn't win that civil war, thing probably would have been much easier on everyone.
