Regarding Interviews
Let me ask my question that is a paragraph long where I actually ask five questions and answer four of them by the time I let you speak so that if you engage with the fifth you’re conceding the other four to me.”
It’s a common propaganda tactic. It’s also a common street interview tactic and comes naturally to most presenters because they’re narcissists who don’t get tired of hearing themselves talk.
Even a talented interviewee is going to struggle to address more than two inaccuracies in a question which is why the best counter is to interrupt the moment someone is incorrect. You may come off as a dick for it, but the alternative reality that you avoid is what happened at the beginning of this video.
As I expect people will start being interviewed in the near future in attempts to smear us further I would also encourage all frens to ask the following questions of a reporter before doing an interview:
If they won’t answer don’t bother. If they just want to have a conversation don’t bother. They’re just looking for shit to spew from talking heads.
If they answer both questions make sure that you as an interviewee then “control the space” which can be as simple as saying something like “I want to be interviewed there while pointing ten feet away” or setting a timer on your phone for the time they stated. The more overhead you can add for the reporter to manage the less time they will be able to spend injecting any agenda they may have and the more power you have in dictating the content of the interview which reflects positively or negatively on you disproportionally, not the reporter. You don’t owe them any favors.

Bring soap and toilet paper as public facilities run out when there is an influx of people.
The primary mechanism that they seem to leverage (also drawing from the hundreds of hours of footage I’ve watched from streamers at protests/riots this year) is intimidation through verbal threats. As their group size relative to you(rs) grows the intensity and frequency of this tactic increases.

Why are you recording?” (2) “I do not consent to being recorded!” (3) “You’re endangering me and my children!” (4) “What you’re doing is illegal!” (5) “You’re QANON trash and a racist!” (6) “Well I’m going to record you then!” (7) “You’re going to be Internet famous” (8) “We’re going to destroy your reputation, RACIST”
() Blocking camera with body, flag, umbrella. () Playing loud music. () Playing copyright protected music (especially if you’re streaming) and reporting you (if they find your stream). () Direct physical violence. () Theft of property. () Physical stalking. () Digital stalking. () Encircling and preventing physical movement.
() Assume that you will be identified and attacked in person/online. Act accordingly.
() Maintain a level head and do not respond to antagonism. Recording antagonism and not playing into it is a default win for you. If you engage in an argument know that you cannot win as they will not argue in good faith. Instead, they will call you a bigot and a racist and a conspiracy theorist and use the information you provided to hurt you.
() Avoid identifying yourself physically. Meaning solid color clothes, generic as possible, wear a hat, wear sunglasses, wear a mask, do not return to a vehicle while being observed, do not bring family members.
() Avoid identifying yourself verbally. Do not provide your name or other identifying information, do not provide a reason for your recording activity past “I would like a record of events” as any engagement will likely be recorded on their end and used to identify you. If you state an ideological preference this will also be used to rationalize an escalation of tactics against you. This also includes a very common mistake that the general public makes, do not provide commentary over video. This commentary can be identifying in and of itself even if you don’t think it is.
() If compelled to identify yourself to non-law enforcement use a fake name, fake affiliation, fake address, and do not EVER allow anyone to physically access your footage or device more broadly. Have this information created beforehand. ProtonMail, Twitter Account, Phone Number is what I maintain per identity and I use a different set each time while recycling the Twitter posts (15 that I dump onto a new account that are standardized to prevent any information leaks).
() Carry a decibel meter or download an app that can roughly measure decibels so that you can record noise violations (might seem petty, but it’s actually quite effective). Use this to troll them. If they are playing copyright protected music report it to the rights holders. You’ll have a recording of it after all.
() Record offline as opposed to streaming for at least one member of your group. You won’t get as many Internet points, but that offline copy is not censorable by a platform. An insane amount of information can be lost if a Twitch stream is deleted for example. If you are going to stream do it through a more censorship resistant platform.
() Rename your recording devices so that they do not include your name or other identifying information. Turn off Bluetooth/WiFi (not just toggle) as the identifiers can be used to track you by any technically adept adversary.
() Familiarize yourself with your state recording laws. Most states allow very broad recording rights in public places. Be aware of where those rights end and how they can be manipulated. Example :: Two people walk up next to you and start having what could be argued is a private conversation. To address this just notify people that you are recording in a timely manner and the onus is then on them to remove themselves or have their conversation recorded. Use common sense and research to determine what “reasonable expectation of privacy” means in a given circumstance.
() Carry a card/sheet or be able to reference the state statues that permit you to record. Relevant both for adversaries and law enforcement, who may rely on an assumed ignorance of the law to justify removing you from a situation.
() Maintain a secondary recording device that can be used if your primary recording device runs out of battery, to provide a static wide shot of a scene you are entering to record close up, or use if your primary device is damaged/stolen, bring an external battery pack and extra charging cables.
() Carry whatever protection is legal to carry in the place you are recording. Contact law enforcement, a lawyer, or conduct your own research beforehand. Don’t be the pede who takes a freedom seed ejector onto federal property and is forced to identify themselves by law enforcement while being recorded.
() Attach devices to your person if possible either through a case that has a wrist strap or a more substantial cable lock that is attached to a harness or backpack.
() If someone gets behind you a commonly observed tactic is grabbing your backpack and throwing you to the ground. Basically, you don’t want to have a handle on your back floating there accessible to anyone. Wear the pack as a frontpack (added bonus is the contents are then accessible without removing the pack). There are many suggested MOLLE configurations to reference which maximize utility and security.
() Come with a purpose driven group, but not a large one. I’ve been bringing two friends who are trusted and can follow directions (like the above). This allows you to continue recording a scene with at least one other person present while the third is getting supplies or scouting. Having a bare minimum of two people recording also means that if you are assaulted or intimidated there are two records of it having taken place from different perspectives.
() If you are being blocked have your second/third move away from you to get a shot. If you’re being blocked that typically means that something is happening which should be recorded. Opposition is rarely disciplined enough to split and cover two or more shots of an event. Beware of violence as a response to this tactic as that is their go to response when their strategies are exposed as lacking.
() Maintain situational awareness and try to stay mobile to the greatest degree possible even if events you are recording remain stationary. Always continue trying to get a better shot. This has the added benefit of making it quite difficult to trap you.
() If they have umbrellas they are violent. Act accordingly, ideally maintaining maximum physical distance from these individuals while still recording their actions.
() In areas like state capitols most groups have at this point established rally points for the beginning and end of action. In the case of actors who hide their identities but commit illegal acts, capturing the initial rally point by showing up before they do and throwing up a passive recording device can establish identities through affiliation. For law enforcement of course.
() For regular participants that have a history of violence or intimidation it is typically quite easy to identify them. A good response to “Get out of here Nazi scum” or “I’ll beat your head against the pavement” is “That is a threat [full_name]. How would [employer_name] feel about you saying that? I am carrying [legal_protection] and will defend myself. I am within my rights to record here under [relevant_state_statute].”

~ Command (Interpret comms from event organizer and stay at the heart of the group as a point for regrouping if anyone separates),
~ Security (Bring whatever weapon is legal and as deadly as you’re comfortable carrying. Be ready to use it to attempt to de-escalate but to follow through if needed. Stay on Command and protect the group unless directed to do otherwise),
~ Logistics (Someone with mobility greater than running speed and dressed neutrally who can check roads for obstacles and run errands if necessary like getting food/water, retrieving a car instead of everyone walking through unknown territory together, or signaling event organizers if comms fail).
~ Innocents (Women, Children, Elders should be protected at all costs and should be pulled away from situations by Scout at direction of Command ideally with a Security).
