Maybe if you're driving, stay in a surrounding area so people who are flying have somewhere to stay nearby and shuttle. Fredericksburg, VA is a college town about a half hour (no traffic) and has a bunch of hotels

Fredericksburg is over on hour south and I-95 can be hellish. Just stay in Alexandria. King St. Metro. There's a free shuttle that runs up and down King St. Old Town is lovely-- plan to enjoy that for a day.
