Crystal City is a great place to stay. Just south of DC right on a subway line. I usually stay at the Hyatt there, much cheaper than DC hotels and the capital building is not far at all.
Being from the area, I'd personally recommend staying north of 50; sticking to the Orange line. CC is fine, and full of cheap hotels, but I'd prefer to be in North Arlington if I had the choice.
