Vet the neighborhoods though. A loooot of those stops/lines not in VIrginia go through bad neighborhoods where you’re likely to be attacked even without wearing Trump gear.
Also, as others have pointed out: make sure ahead of time the trains are running. For example, I believe Blue is down at the moment.
Even in VA. Though when people say to stay in Alexandria, they’re usually talking about Alexandria City/Old Town, which is nice (and expensive/lefty)
Do NOT book hotels in Alexandria just outside Old Town and on Richmond Hwy aka Route 1. I wouldn’t start looking at places to stay until you at least get to past Ft. Belvoir or Lorton
It's also more about enjoying a nicer area while here. I'm born and raised in NoVA -- lived in N. Arlington for 8 years. Arlington/Alexandria is pretty trashy overall, but for a few choice locations.

Avoid Route 1 if you can. Just don't go south. Stick to hotels near the King St. Metro or Eisenhower.
