Viruses mutate to become less deadly over time, not more. Killing hosts quickly reduces likelihood of transmission.

Viruses replicate very very quickly... and as such create ERRORS in the new genetic material in the offspring.... each error is NOT A MUTATION per se' -
a FULL MUTATION with regards to PUBLIC HEALTH would mean that the human Immune system would need to recognize the 2 variants of the viral strain as unique from each other....
that would mean people who have immunity to COIVD NOW, would not be immune to the new strain and could catch a second case. That would be a TRUE COVID 2.0. - we are not there yet as far as I know.
But there is a high possibility for this to occur... INFLUENZA does similar things.... in past years in the US maybe 50 million people catch an Influenza strain and it replicates like crazy... causing genetic errors - and new variants pop up. (this is why they push the Flu Shot every year... )

I've followed nextstrain.org since probably February, and they follow the mutation-offshoots with rigor. That said, I have not read or seen where any of these mutations have sprung up and the virus behaves any differently than the original strain. I don't know much about the epidemiology of this beyond my intense interest at its outset, but it all sounds like more fear-baiting chatter until I see people dropping dead.
