Yes, we went along at first. We were told that there was a very serious disease, and that millions would die. We aren't murderers, and we are (or were) a high trust society. We did what we thought needed to be done. This pandemic was a scam, but deadly pandemic disease is a very real disaster that can happen and that would require us to come together to beat it.
We chose to accept what we were told, at least provisionally, for the good of society. When the fire alarm goes off you get yourself and others to safety and then you ask if the building was actually on fire.
This doesn't mean we gave up the right to question and resist, only that we acted quickly. We clearly ARE still asking questions or we wouldn't be at this point. It's pretty clear that we were taken for a ride, and those responsible must be found and punished.
The powers that be cried wolf, and they did it cynically knowing that we would respond. We need to hold them responsible, not beat ourselves up for reacting in good faith to that cry.
I believe the same people that can be hypnotized can be brainwashed. Most are students and stupid people. Trump supporters have great bullshit detectors. They see through all of it clear as day.
