I live there. DC hasn't been a rough city in a long time. Even parts of SE DC are nice now. AOC's swanky ass apartment that she was criticized for renting is in South East DC.

Honestly I forget what the bicycle rules for riding the metro is, but I'm guessing that the internet knows. Best bet is to park outside of town and bike in. Just make sure that you can get back to your car before dark. Riding a bike in DC after dark isn't fun, even in the summer.

Yea this is a bad sticky. Used to live in DC and the metro is fine but people should certainly have a contingency plan in case they shut it down. Do certain metro lines run thru bad parts of town? Yea sure but it’s no different than literally any other US city and if you’re not getting off on those stops (mostly in MD) then there shouldn’t be a problem. If you’re doing metro coming in from VA is probably better since none of those stops are thru bad areas if I recall.

Maybe simply park 5-20 miles away, and use a portable scooter/bike to finish the rest of the journey. Some scooters can go up to 30mph which will get you there in no time.

I second this I live around Bethesda and it's super safe. Not a bad place to park a car and take the train in either. It would take about ~30-40 minutes to take the train and walk.
Still some decent prices at the Wharf area and Holiday Inn near the Mall. Other ways in: Chevy Chase Embassy Suites goes right into the DC metro with a mall and good food as well. Tysons Corner is a little more upscale. Crystal City will always have a room somewhere. Alexandria Va has the usual chain hotels. DO NOT stay in Adams Morgan or SE dc, they will kill you.
In Atlanta when you take Marta out of the airport it goes right into the ghetto. We had an instance with an employee getting pummeled while riding between two stops by a mob who then got off at the next stop and disappeared
Yeah DC metro is incredibly safe relative to other cities with train systems. I would avoid SE DC as always but other than that it should be fine.

I've used them countless times. I know plenty of girls that ride it alone daily and never have problems. The area of DC that we will be dealing with on the 6th is easy to access without going through any bad neighborhoods. Its some of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the country with some of the lowest crime. Just don't go through South East DC or Howard U and you will be good.

As someone who has worked in DC on and off for years: Take the Metro. It'll be fine. Take the Red line if you insist on going through Maryland for some reason.

Yes. Uber/Lyft can accommodate you all. There are also plenty of Metro (subway) routes that don’t go through sketchy areas. Start in Virginia and you should be good. The silver line and orange line in VA are very safe.

All I know is that it's a skinny state, and when we drive therough on family trips, we always gassed up well before, never stopped in MD, and counted down the mile markera until we were through.

Honestly I forget what the bicycle rules for riding the metro is, but I'm guessing that the internet knows. Best bet is to park outside of town and bike in. Just make sure that you can get back to your car before dark. Riding a bike in DC after dark isn't fun, even in the summer.

Yea this is a bad sticky. Used to live in DC and the metro is fine but people should certainly have a contingency plan in case they shut it down. Do certain metro lines run thru bad parts of town? Yea sure but it’s no different than literally any other US city and if you’re not getting off on those stops (mostly in MD) then there shouldn’t be a problem. If you’re doing metro coming in from VA is probably better since none of those stops are thru bad areas if I recall.

Yeah DC metro is incredibly safe relative to other cities with train systems. I would avoid SE DC as always but other than that it should be fine.

The area of DC that we will be dealing with on the 6th is easy to access without going through any bad neighborhoods. Bring a sowing needle and thread as well as a few patches of moleskin (pref one patch as big as your ankle in addition to a few bandaid sized ones). Maybe you won't use them but it'll be the best 10$ you EVER spent if you or someone nearby needs it. You can put on moleskin even after the "damage is done" by the time you feel the blister coming on. No larp, just lessons off my literal hide. Some bandaids also work in a pinch but most don't so unless you've tested them splurge on the moleskin.

As someone who has worked in DC on and off for years: Take the Metro. It'll be fine. Take the Red line if you insist on going through Maryland for some reason.
Take the Orange line (stations on Interstate 66) if you come from the West.
Do NOT go to/through Maryland on the Orange or Silver line.

Yeah I'm considering moving my flight to Baltimore and coming in on the Amtrak for the last leg. Baltimore doesn't have COVID test nonsense and the COVID nonsense says that travelers from VA and MD are exempt. More flights available at Baltimore as well and the prices look similar.
DC area dude here... You can park in Rosslyn VA or Crystal City VA and walk the bridges.. It's about a mile across to the monuments. Map it and consider it. If you can walk, it's a great way to avoid traffic, public transportation and see the city.
