Expect temperatures in the 20’s-30’s at night and low 40’s for the highs.
I see many posts of people planning to sleep in their vehicles or in tents and many more with no plan at all. If this is you, please at least make a go bag with cold weather gear.
Here are some tips:
A plastic rain poncho will keep you dry. If you sit on a chair or bucket and carefully place a candle or can of sterno between your feet, you will stay comfortably warm. Just don’t forget it is there and light yourself on fire. Learned the trick in SERE and learned the warning once while hunting.
The candle or can of sterno will also keep a vehicle warm enough to be safe. Just make sure you have adequate air circulation.
Bring a few days of food. I recommend protein bars, foil packs of tuna, and canned soups if you have room.
Small propane heaters are great, just remember that the small canisters only last about 4-5 hours if running constantly.
Check your local thrift stores for sleeping bags. Any variety should be fine for 20 deg and up. Just wash it first.
When you’re done making your cold weather supply kit, make a second one. You WILL run into a fellow American who didn’t plan ahead and you will be the guy who made sure they made it thru the night and were 100% ready for the fight ahead.
Godspeed fellow Americans!

DO NOT HAVE AN OPEN FLAME OF ANY KIND IN A VEHICLE WITHOUT ADEQUATE VENTILATION.
YOU CAN DIE FROM HYPOXIA AND CARBON MONOXIDE.
YOU WILL GO TO SLEEP AND YOU WON'T WAKE UP.

Meaning, you probably need 6-8 square inches of ventilation for any type of gas, propane, or alcohol fueled heater
If you have the option, a catalytic propane is a far better choice, but they're much harder to find these days. No open flame, runs longer on a tank of propane, and they don't produce carbon monoxide. You still have to vent though, because they WILL use up the oxygen in a small space.
Be VERY careful, pedes!
No tragedies, please!
Excellent comment! Yeah, those catalytic propane heaters are crazy expensive right now and I haven’t been able to find small canisters of propane around dallas for a while now. I refill mine, but I could use a few more reserves.
We should sticky this!
Electric socks and a speedo and I'm ready to go.
Socks? Wouldn’t you need just one?
Three , one for the speedo too.
3
I'll join you in my American flag Speedo my fellow Pede. We can split the cost of the third pair of electric socks.
Bring a metal coffee can for that candle/sterno. Both amplifies and distributes the heat more safely!
Mylar emergency blankets. So cheap so useful. Thermal warmer chemical packs, last hours, come in several sizes. Available at most dollar stores and below 5s. Thrift stores usually have cold weather gear. Check prepper channels on video platforms for endless information on cold weather comfort. Extra socks and gloves, hands and feet sweat during stress and excitement, keep them dry. That area is prone to wind in winter, a sharp painful wind, be aware and prepared for it. Chapstick.
All good advice! People don’t realize how useless they’ll become once they’re shivering and their fingers are numb. Add to that a few sleepless nights fighting the cold and the average person’s resolve will deteriorate quickly.
I think we may be sturdier than that, no sense being uncomfortable though. 😉
Shit, you got a can of stereo in SERE?!?
I went through multiple times. I enlisted to be a sere instructor. Made it thru indoc course, moved to Fairchild AFB near Spokane, spent a year in the woods before failing out and getting reclassed. We had all sorts of tricks to stay warm.
I had to go through SV86 again before my first deployment, but only had to do a shortened version for the second deployment.
Ohhhh... AF SERE. That explains it...
Lol! Thanks! I’m not one of those pedes that gets bent out of shape over good-natured, inter-service ribbing. I’ve served next to every service and respect all of them... but I’ll still make sure to get a joke or two in at their expense whenever possible.
Right on!! Stay cool.
Ah, nice. I had to do that shit in Maine when it was -15 outside...nothing was warm about it
Another thread I posted with some tips on staying warm:
https://thedonald.win/p/11R4ubKxbZ/psa-canadian-pede-with-some-tips/
Make sure to come prepared. You wont be in the cold for a couple hours, It'll be a couple days!
Warm and toasty pedes = effective pedes!
Another tip if you're planning on crashing in your car... buy a cheap pack of candles. One candle burning in your car will increase the internal temperature by 10-15 degrees. A real life saver!
Just make fires in the streets like the enemy does
Good advice!
While I lack the trust to make this offer to a stranger online I will make it once I get to DC to any Pede(s) I meet face to face that needs shelter...the room I have reserved has a fold out bed in the couch. Better than being outside overnight. The shower and room service for food will also be available for any overnighter. It's not much, but it's what I'll have to offer.
Peace...
It might not be beneath authorities to use fire hoses to spray crowds during freezing temperatures, it has happened in the past.
BEEF JERKY!
YES!
Parking garages on the lowest level stay nice and toasty because of residual heat from buildings.
Park with others not alone
