I suspect McCain and Romney both KNEW THE FIX WAS IN and went along with it.

To me it makes sense when I recall the excitement injected into the McCain campaign when Palin joined, and the confusion I had when the Campaign neutered her.

Romney just wilted after that great debate he had.
