Same suggestion I made yesterday here--socks and rocks. Saw more than a few hippies hospitalized way back in the day this way.
Get the black over the calf athletic socks. Fruit of the loom makes good ones. Rocks can be found anywhere or brought along, as can other random weighty objects.
The way it used to work back in the day was you'd fill the sock with rocks, and put it to use. Then dump the rocks and return sock to foot in the confusion. Or, just dump the sock in the nearest trash can. Black doesn't show blood. Less than a pound of weight at the end of a hard swing packs a really heavy punch.
When you are going into a potentially heated "protest" situation in a place where firearms can really cause problems, you think outside the box. As a little old lady myself, When I go into a potentially violent outdoor situation, I carry a weighted purse with reinforced straps ;-). My ID and important shit is never in a purse anyway I have been mugged before.
Other options would include wrist rockets/sling shots with ball bearings.
