Hmmm, don't serial killers get the same feeling when they kill their victims? If you kill once, it's the death penalty, so why not kill as many as you can?
Hell I worked on a farm and never felt good about killing...chickens, even after having done it repeatedly. And those were chickens, not people.

Yeah I feel ya. I'm a hunter and have killed many wild animals, but someone gave me a live tamed rabbit and I felt dirty killing it.
