Texas has most of the military. Between all the Republican states, they already have almost all the oil in the US. The nuclear deterrent option would be used to achieve and maintain independence and oil blockades could be used to keep Yank ambitions in check should they try to implement policies that either draw states into economic dependence or hardship.
