The one that got the most compliance was when the "learner" was in the other room, communicating his answers by pushing a button. The only hint that he was hurting was a pounding sound on the wall and the answers stopping.
The variety with the least compliance was when the "teacher" sat right next to the "learner" (the actor at least) and had to physically force his hand onto the electric shock plate.
But some people went all the way even in that last scenario.
...
Another thing: There was another variation where there were three people sharing the duties of the "teacher." The actual subject and two confederates. At time went on, one confederate would say he didn't feel right doing this, and would quit. A few steps later, the second confederate would do the same. The experimenter would ask the real subject to assume their duties and keep going. They were far more likely to stop.
When one person quits doing the evil, it inspires others do to the same.
