tbf it's partially because USPS is forced to comply with all kinds of government regulations like that they have to deliver to everyone for the same price. So FedEx/UPS can say no way are we delivering to this crazy remote location for this cheap price but USPS is forced to take the loss on it.

That is basically a beautiful metaphor as to why government run business normally lose money.
