Your wifi can be on the same network as a hardwire. Doubt the lazy workers would want to switch wifi's just to change the thermostat. I bet you they had it on the same network
This can very easily be done. Regardless of a hardline connection all you need is a wifi enabled device on the same network as the hard wired device. On your windows machine turn on ICS. Connect stat to the wifi via ICS and your online. Start to finish less then 5 mins.
