It's quite common for thermostats to hook up to the internet these days. Landlords install them to keep track of heating costs or control them. There's even been lawsuits about it.

You can connect the damn thing to your network... but without a internet connection you can't control them or enable outside communication into the network. That is my point. Nobody cares if this thing was inside and connected to the network. If there is no external connectivity, there is no connectivity to provide an attack vector.
