A masking liquid is a good deterrent. Used to be able to buy this stuff called skunk piss. During hunting season you put a few drop on the soles of your boots to mask your odor. Stuff smells terrible and lingers forever. You can find such products in Wal-Mart, or stores that sell hunting supplies. Throw some of that stuff and they'll be gagging and running for cover.

Surrounding them would be great, don't think I've seen that happen yet. It's always a frontal attack.
