If you burn hardwood, save the ashes. Take a 5-gallon bucket and drill a 1"-2" hole in the bottom of it. Put an old t-shirt or other fabric over the hole. Pour ashes in bucket, about half full. Pour 3-4 gallons of water through ashes.
Lye comes out of the bottom. The more water you pour through the ashes, the more diluted the lye will be, so change out the ashes frequently.
