Candidates run for power and position within the party, and fame, as it were. They are throwing themselves into the pool to negotiate for getting cabinet positions of power.
And the DNC argued it's a private organization and can do whatever it wants. If they don't like your candidate they'll get rid of them one way or another.

Why worry about getting caught rigging a general or midterm when you win either way.
