The Sanhedrin (the Jewish high court of priests of the temple in Jerusalem) convicted Jesus of blaspheming. They sent him to Herod (the Roman puppet 'King of the Jews') who bounced him back. They then sent him to Pilate (the Roman Prelate of Judea), who sentenced him to death. Pilate then allowed the mob to choose one of those condemned to be freed, as was the tradition at Passover. The mob chose Barabbas, and Pilate washed his hands of the matter.
