Hanging would be the appropriate punishment. Traitors and spies were hung because it is seen as a dishonorable death.

Firing squads were a soldiers death or for enemies held in high regard.

Mercy in a hanging involved allowing friends or compatriots of the hanged man to tug on the legs to ensure a quicker death.

Just some facts from history.

Nothing looks as good as an old fashioned guillotine though. The rustier and duller the blade the better.
