it's not clear to me why someone with an abnormally high IQ would struggle to associate with normal people assuming they aren't autistic

why wouldn't it be easier? doesn't the high IQ indicate their ability to learn and adapt to "normal conversation or customs" would be outstanding!?

Most people are very simple and never give serious thought to politics, history or the meaning of life. Try discussing these topics with most people and they zone out or brush it off.

Thing is, regardless of IQ what you just described is how your average random person feels. Basically everyone who is or isn't brilliant basically considers themselves to be brilliant.

Pretty sure I heard this in traffic school: 8/10 people consider themselves above-average drivers.

You see additional substructure which isn’t available to others and that naturally leads to “impedance mismatches”.

I like that analogy.

My brain (168, last time I was tested) makes leaps of logic that others don't follow well. For instance, my SO will say, "Did you get peanut butter at the store?"

My brain: Peanut butter Store Saw someone we know there. That person spoke to me about a family matter.

Me, 30 seconds later: "Did you know Mike is getting a divorce?"

My SO: blank stare

This happens all the time, every day, no matter who I'm talking to or what the subject is. Now, I've never been test for ADD or anything, so maybe it's that, but that's just my experience.

That's just how brains work. Or my brain works similarly, but I'm sure that everyone's brains are constantly making connections even without us knowing

It’s not add look into neuroptimal neurofeedback it helps with staying on track. All that mental busyness is a waste of energy. Get some blank space in your consciousness it helps when you want to move things around.
