I always thought the common cold was Rhinovirus. I know Coronavirus is a relatively common one as well, but I don't believe it was the original common cold.
The common cold is a generic term for the common cold, which has its basis in several viruses.
Common cold is pretty much anything that makes you sneeze/cough with runny nose, etc.
The reason there is no “common cold” syrup, like flu or specific symptoms is because of that simple fact. The common cold is caused by more then one virus with common symptoms.
