A buddy of mine used to be a volunteer firefighter and he said the logic of having them go on calls with medical is that if the house is locked, they're the forcible entry guys. They can take the door down in no time, cut through walls, etc. Granted, very rarely is that ever needed, but that's the logic for them going.
Firefighters are people who are needed only once in a while, but when they are needed, we need a bunch of them, fast, and they have to be able to act.
They get sent out on medical calls because the trucks are good for dealing with traffic, and they need the exercise.
You can bitch all you like about NYC firefighters, but that is the group of people who, when the chips are down, rush toward a burning building and pull out people by the many thousands before it collapses on them.
