I've always wondered why a nation currently fighting a two front war would bother to build death camps and shuffle people by train cross country just to kill them.

What if the real excuse was the ongoing Typhus pandemic, and people boarded the trains because they thought the government would protect them.

The totalitarian government wanted control, camps provide control, the totalitarian government wanted to force people to work or perform medical experiments on them, the camps allowed that as well because 24x7 GPS tracking on humans wasn't possible back then. Last thing, people who trust their government are less likely to make a run for it when forced to board a train.

Now that's a story that makes a bit more sense.
