I hate to say it, but supporting free speech won’t make you rich. Manipulating algorithms to pay for advertisers and other powerful groups is what pays the bills. Unfortunately, advertisers are hesitant to advertise on sites that call for throwing communists out of helicopters and executing Democrat traitors.

I'm somewhat inclined to agree. But voat could have been saved.

I think Put was burned out, and i can see why.

He was saying how his “angel” investor backed out, denying the financial support needed to keep Voat afloat. He ran out of money, and chose today for its symbolic value to shut it down.

Yeah. But when people offered help, including 100% free hosting, he didn't respond.

I think it was both factors.

If you have to pay it will never be anonymous. Without anonymity, true free expression will never happen.

That's why we need low-cost peer-to-peer online infrastructure like IPFS. No monolithic centralized servers, just light-weight API services for things like pubsub reply notifications, search, etc - which can also be decentralized.

The ideal is for everyone to host their own content and syndicate other people's content they like. Everyone should also have a VPS for backup in case their home connection goes down. Also useful to host your own VPN (less likely to spy on you than a big "trust us we don't log" VPN provider).
