Religion is what you do with what you believe. It's not necessarily Theological in origin. We've just never really seen two compatible "Religions" at once, at this point in history, at least.
But, like, let's talk about Absolom's rebellion, in the Old Testament. At the time, if you listened to Absolom, he was the King of Israel. And God had told the Jews to be in submission to their king. So one could believe God and submit to the King... but do they believe Absolom? Or do they believe David, in Exile, who says HE is still the Lord's Anointed King? One could believe David, and act in support of David, and believe God, and follow God's laws correctly, and the two would not be in opposition to each other. But anyone saying that they follow both God and Absolom was wrong about one of those two- the more important of the two.
So now in the US, could one follow the Teachings of Donald Trump AND follow the Teachings of Christ? Honestly, yeah, probably. You might have to make a slight amendment here or there to something that our President has said, for instance about going after people who have wronged you, if in the event they repent of that. But if someone comes at you, Trump would be fine with you stomping his skull in, and so would Jesus, who gave you the inalienable right to defend yourself.
So following both a Theological Religion about Jesus, and a Secular Religion about following the Winning Strategies of our Greatest President who often mentioned that very same Jesus, and though imperfect claimed to also follow Him? Sounds fine to me!
I know what you mean, but I think it’s a case of Trumpism as a philosophy, and Christianity as a religion. You believe in Christ as the Lord, whilst perhaps following Trumpism like you would follow Socratic teaching, for example.
Wait Jesus gave you the inalienable right to defend yourself? I think I missed that chapter in the bible where he said when you get slapped on the cheek, to train your rifle on them.
Luke 22:36 - Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take [it], and likewise [his] scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
I wouldn't say that's a passage about an inalienable right to defend yourself. Jesus goes on to say that "two swords is enough" (for a group of 11), meaning he doesn't really mean everyone should go get a sword to protect themselves. Rather it's about preparing the group for what will happen. I'd rather interpret it as the right of a group to defend itself as a whole. Turn the other cheek is pretty blatant when it comes to what to do in individual cases.
Turn the other cheek is about insult, though. One would insult a man by striking with the back of the hand. To offer the other cheek by turning would put it in a position where to strike it, you'd need a clenched fist. It says, simultaneously, "Okay, you're a brute, so go ahead and assault me, proving me the better man," and also " You hit like a bitch, I can take a REAL hit. "
You don't turn the other cheek when someone is actually attacking you.
