The ability to Transmit has made me aware of the limitations or issues with my cheap equipment. If you just want to listen..try an SDR (software defined Radio) or DudeStar a software package for DMR (digital radio through the internet)

Yeah, well, they are modem sounds because that is digital metadata being sent to all stations that can hear it. Radio and TV stations are required to listen for these transmissions from other stations, and they have to decode these, and the code says where the broadcast should be spread (some affected area, statewide, nationwide), and if a station should spread it, it must. And this is all automatic. This was designed during the cold war in case of nuclear war.
For texts, I've no idea how it works. Maybe it's not redundant, or maybe it is, but why design it to have a single point of failure?
