Knitting isn't lucrative. Some people can make some money selling patterns or scarves, but it's mostly a hobby.
The problem is that there's two groups of knitters; conservative moms and grandmas who like having a productive hobby that doesn't take up much room or need too much equipment, and fat lesbians who like to pretend they're creative. The latter group is louder and has more time to post on Tumblr and reddit than the former.
The hivemind when it comes to some discussions is still very noticeable though, even if you're on a random videogame sub, you'll find most people have their brains wired in a way that's pretty telling... you can know for sure who they voted for and what their political ideology is.
