Article I just read said that the chains he wore were taken from the lost and found at the bars he worked, and as a bouncer he'd wear them as he stood out front so people could ID their property without paying cover charge to go in again.
I remember seeing him on a "best bouncer" TV show where he was crashing through doors and crap. This was years before he was famous.
Fun fact, Mr T was a bouncer and all those chains he wore around his neck were like scalps. Everyone he had to beat up he took their chains.
